To update the old expression: live by the gun, die by the gun. Those thugs got exactly what was coming to them. It's really sad to see that kind of thing happen, though. Now the officers have to live with having killed another person. That's a tough burden to bear.

My guess is that many of the residents were afraid to evacuate and leave their belongings to these thugs.

NO has a police force of 1500? It seems inadequate in size for this population. I'll leave the decision to stay in the hands of those with the greatest experience with what previous disasters wrought.

We are developing a tribal culture in this country. Its name is street gang.

Good kill, they had them coming.

Seriously, you think NO is bad, think of LA area. When police found out someone who got murdered are related to gang, they don't even investigate, they write it off because it is too common. It is so common it is not on TV anymore.

We should adopt the punishment of Singapore, whip the heck out of all the criminals.

Yup.

Looting = Snagging a cart full of DVD players

Finding Food = Breaking into a flooded-out store to find some dry Twinkies to feed your starving kids.

I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy what the folks on the Gulf Coast are going through right now.

Too bad the race baiters can't distinguish this fact.

Why would anyone do this, otherwise? Maybe money being funneled in by some terror groups?

New Orleans is the murder capital of the world.

There is a resident class of rapacious thugs who prey night and day on tourists and those stupid enough to get in the areas of the city they control, which even the NO police don't bother to patrol.

They constitute about 5-10% of the population, but when all the people with plane tickets, cars, and someplace to go left, all that was left were old people, women with small children, and these thugs.

North of NO they used the local school system's school buses to get the old people, women, and children out.

In NO the school buses are underwater.

Until you actually try to do business in NO, it's hard to imagine what a completely corrupt and inept city, Parish, and state government they've got down there.

A&E did a piece on NO. Said it's been a corrupt environment for a very long time. It's part of the culture of the place. It has all the appearances of a legit municipal operation ..officials, police, etc....but is dirty.

The Austrailian ran this story yesterday about the 5 killed on the bridge. The story appears to have been removed today.

Five People Shot Dead

At least five people shot dead by police as they walked across a New Orleans bridge yesterday were contractors working for the US Defence department, according to a report by The Associated Press.
A spokesman for the Army Corps of Engineers said the victims were contractors on their way to repair a canal, the new agency said, quoting a defence Department spokesman.

The contractors crossing the bridge to launch barges into Lake Pontchartrain, in an operation to fix the 17th Street Canal, according to the spokesman.

The shootings took place on the Danziger Bridge, across a canal connecting Lake Pontchartrain to the Mississippi River.

Early on Sunday, Deputy Police Chief W.J. Riley of New Orleans said police shot at eight people, killing five or six.

No other details were immediately available.

Most of these thugs will have a hard time when going up against SWAT trained police squads. They are at their best against unarmed civilians.

PandaBear,

Singapore is really tough. We don't whip (cane actually) people for firearm offences. We hang them.

As long as you draw an illegal firearm and fire it, and even if nobody is killed from it, you hang. Possession of an illegal firearm already guarantees you some long terms. Not just the firearm alone but also any form of ammunition including empty cartridges.

The main offences that result in caning are sexual assaults even statutory rape. Maximum is 24 strokes. Women don't get caned.

New Orleans Police Kill 4 in Shootout
By MICHAEL LUO
NEW ORLEANS, Sept. 4 - New Orleans police officers yesterday shot and killed four people and wounded two others who had fired at officers escorting a convoy of contractors across a bridge, the authorities said.

The group of 14 contractors from Boh Brothers Construction, one of New Orleans's largest construction companies, was working for the Army Corps of Engineers on levee repairs and drainage, said Robert Boh, the president of the company.

The convoy, which included officials from the Army Corps of Engineers and was being escorted by a group of police officers on an anti-looting detail, was crossing the Danziger Bridge, 10 miles northeast of the French Quarter, when the shots were fired.

W. J. Riley, the assistant superintendent of police in New Orleans, said a gunfight ensued between the police and a group of six men.

"All our officers said the assailants all had guns," Mr. Riley said. Later, he said all the assailants were "neighborhood thugs."

"Five of the subjects were shot," he said. "Two were killed, three were wounded." The sixth gunman was arrested and charged with attempted murder of a police officer, but none of the gunmen were identified.

The superintendent said that as the shooting broke out, two of the men fled across the bridge and were pursued by officers.

"One officer saw one subject go into a building," he said. "Another ran around the building. Shots were fired." Mr. Riley said one of the two was killed and the other was arrested.

None of the contractors were hurt and they were even initially unaware that anyone had been shot, said Mr. Boh, learning of it only later in news reports on the Internet.

Joseph B. Treaster contributed reporting for this article.

Neighbor hood thugs?so the police knew of them? Why is there a problem. Why do only neighbor hood thugs have the guns seems backwards. We have alot of people who have no common sense.

There's a saying in NO:

"We don't tolerate corruption, we insist on it."

Here in the States that story was retracted.

Apparently the news didn't get to Australia.

Gun control is there to keep guns out of the hands of citizens. That's what laws are for, to protect the citizens. The courts and the politicians are there to protect the rights of criminals. It's called the balance of power. One would not want a criminal to be shot by an angry citizen. If the NO Police are not careful and keep shooting and aresting criminals in NO they will have the ACLU after them. The NO Police must be careful because the ACLU has on their staff, the best judges, lawyers, government officials and politicians in the business. The ACLU has a hugh budget and can afford even the largest judgements. Before the real rescue and rebuilding can get into high gear, officials must stop and find out who is to blame for everything. It's important to know who is at fault because the news media wants more to broadcast than people building new homes, roads and eating food out of cans in a shelter. There's the next election to think about and people want to know.

Do you think Geroge is related to that caracter in Little Abner the was followed by a rain cloud, everywere that he went? Anyone remeber the name?
