Was wondering if this is a good oil and can be used in place of any HDEO 15W40 or it'll be too thick? If so, can always make a home brew

Planning to use it in a motorcycle. Thanks for any help.

Why not use the VR1 20w-50 if the weight would possibly be a concern?

I've not used the straight 50, but have been running the VR1 20w-50 in my methanol-fueled big-block racing engines for many years.

Did you buy this SAE 50 at Autozone during their yearly clearance? Lol.

I bought all of their 20w50 for dad's 240z's at $2 a quart. The SAE 50 and SAE 60 made it down to $1, but somebody already bought it up. Oh well.

Lol, actually I plan to pick it up from a neighbor and since I am paying $0, so why not use it in a motorcycle after blending it with something.

Or worst case, I'll use it in OPE.

There’s zero need for blending, but it’ll work for OPE too.

For once, I’m concerned with cold flow so don’t use it in a snow blower. Lol.

Friend I grew up with, his family raced dirt track sprint cars, also owned a wrecker service. They ran Valvoline Racing SAE 50 in EVERYTHING. Those engines seemed to last as long as anyone elses did. Even in cold temps.

It's fine for most stuff. Not good in Ford FE motors with stock oil pump drives unless you let them warm up at idle before you hit high RPMs ... It's viscous enough to break an oil pump drive in an FE. Been there done that more than once.

What motorcycle? Some care more than others ...

I usually always have 90's or 2000's motorcycles. Currently an 2000 R1 and Vfr800

For summer use it should be fine even by itself. Some engines are more sensitive than others to thicker oils though - so they might feel a bit more sluggish, especially as the oil is warming up. VR-1 SAE 50 is 219 cst at 40C.

FWIW, I've been running VR-1 SAE 40 in my Yamaha FZ-09 for more than a year and the stuff is fantastic. Monogrades don't shear so shifting never degrades - if it weren't for maintenance records I'd forget to change the oil since it never 'feels' like it needs to be changed.
