Thoughts on engine quietness and idle gear moving?

Background - Purchased a 2010 Toyota Rav4 V6 (2GR-FE) back in February, now has 100,000 miles on it. I've been using a home brew 30 weight oil combination since then and probably done 3 or 4 oil changes. It has has gotten half PUP 5w-20 and half M1 0w-40. This vehicle calls for 5w30 SL as it has no oil cooler.

This time around I only had 5w-20 PUP on hand so I went 100% with that, Toyota says the 2GR-FE can use 5w-20 even for the Rav4 according to some of the newer documentation I've seen online. Anyways, on to the point of this thread. Using the PUP 5w-20 only, I have noticed the engine is quite a bit quieter than with the 0/5w30 brew so much so that I'm often checking to see if it's even running while I'm idling I've noticed. One other strange thing I've noticed is that when I'm in Reverse or Drive and the engine is fully up to temp, it no longer moves on its own unless I give it a little gas, thought that was strange since it's always moved on it's own while idling in gear before the oil change..

I don't know why you would mix mobil1 and PUP. Use one of the other. Watering down both defeats the purpose.

The oil change has absolutely nothing to do with the car's idle performance or moving while in gear.

On VOA's they don't look too dissimilar additive number wise, granted they probably use different brands of individual additives to get there though.. Also, the newer M1 0w-40 is GTL like PUP. The point is/was to use up old stock, now that is done it's one brand/weight.

I would tend to agree, just doesn't seem like a coincidence that it was/is noticed as the exact same time as the oil change, when the vehicle has run one way since I get it in February.

You're looking at the wrong system. You either have an IAC issue, or a transmission issue if that is what is going on.

I know my Tundra had a wonky idle this summer. It was time for plugs so I did those, found some oil in the plugs while at it. I also cleaned the intake valve at the same time. The plugs looked ok, but it idled better, so I am guessing it was just a dirty intake (and it was quite dirty).

Unless he accidentally filled the tranny with PUP lmao.

The issue turned out to be the tranny a bit low on fluid, I added .6/quart and it's operating normally again. The engine is still super quiet on 5w-20 so I guess that's a good thing.
