This made me sick

I was at the opening of a new Asian grocery store in Houston today and I was browsing, looking for cool dishes for my dorm room when I can across the "Auto, House" section. Sitting there was "Ring Seal" Brand motor oil. They were straight weights. SAE 30 and 40. On the bottle it said 100% Virgin Oil. I looked on the back of the bottle, it stated:

quote:

Ring Seal oil is made from high quality base stocks to provide superior protection. For use in engines requiring SA QUALITY OIL

If I had a camera phone, I'd would of taken a picture. This was right under the "Ring Seal" brand Type A tranny fluid. Both were priced at 99 cents. Ironically, they also sold Chevron brand Dextron III!!!

I laughed at this when I saw it and then I realized, some person is gonna actually buy it and put it into their engine.

Actually I was glad that the convenience stores do sell the SA junk. Just bought an air compressor and it called for non-detegent 30 weight. Corner store carried it. Only $1.19. They also carried several other known name SLs for $2.50 each...

My sister bought a quart of that SA stuff. Should have to be labeled "Antique Motor Oil." TOld her to take it back and get the one buck Havoline at the other dollar type store.

But wait, wouldn't it be interesting to see a UOA of that stuff on a modern car? Anybody at BITOG want to volunteer the test unit?

Hey, Patman, don't you have a car you are soon getting rid of?

I remember one time a guy posted on here that a dealer service manager had seen 11 engine failures due to the use of SA oil.
My suspicion is that if you tried that experiment, you bloody well might not still have a running engine when it was time for you to run a UOA.

Preferably someone with a 'Vette, Viper, Ferrari, Mercedes, Maybach, Bentley, Rolls, Audi, or BMW. Minimum 7,000 mile OCI.

i wonder if that's old stock or if companies still produce it.

Sadly, both bottles, the oil and the trans fluid, looked brand new and white. There was no dust because well, the store opened up yesterday. For those in Houston, its called Viet Hoa and they are on Beachnut and Beltway 8 South, where K-mart used to be.

I was thinking about trying it in my dad's 10 year old Craftsmen lawn mower. Its burning and leaking oil...i have to admit, I wonder how it would do. Compared to other bottles of oil, the oil looked darker through the little window in comparison to the Pennzoil and the Pennzoil was in a yellow bottle. The Ring Seal brand was in a white bottle.

Ya. Super tech is only $.88, And the SF stuff they carry is $.84. Both are better than the SA junk.

Oddly I knew about the API donut many years ago. This is the sign of a true weirdo!

Actually this kind of oil can kill a small engine, like on a mower or tiller pretty quickly.

Small engines need an oil with a very good additive package. There is a lot of contamination and acids to be neutralized.

Actually I kind of like the idea. With the government rescuing everyone from their own stupidity and help to defeat the Darwin Theory...This oil is perfect for helping to separate idiots from their cars.

I say name the oil Darwin's Revenge

Reason number 58 (for us anal types anyway!)for buying only new or from folks you know

There are some related comments in the "Interesting Articles" forum. Look for the thread about "Group pushing fair-trade . . .", which covers proposed labeling requirements requiring warnings on obsolete grades of motor oil.

I expressed the opinion that over-the-counter sales of SA oils should be banned. But see that thread for the full commentary.

I knew about the API donut well before I ever learned to drive.

It's in the owner's manual for most vehicles.
