This tire was on the van next to me at Verizon

I think a lot of it has to do with cost. Not very many people have the ability to plunk down 500-1000 for tires, especially if they did that once already and due to a shot suspension they are worn quickly again.

Another reason is that the money they "spend" on the tires could be used towards something else.

Some repairs, you get your car back the way it was before it broke, an ECU, an alternator or such. It's like tossing money into a black hole with no improvement to the car. Other "repairs" improve your car, like brakes or in this case, tires...so I really don't mind spending the money on something like that.

This made me chuckle. A buddy and I were having a similar conversation about home repairs. Windows, roof, caulking or re-pointing - you just stop water from coming in and put things "back" like they used to be. Kitchen and bath renos are at least something that looks like an improvement. We both had little choice but to replace some windows in our house in the last year and it's really expensive. Even after spending all that money you don't tell your friends "come over and check out my new windows - they're awesome!".

Unfortunately you still need to keep the weather out and the first category of spending is still necessary. Two part epoxy wood filler was my best friend to keep them weather tight for a couple more years though...

if you can't afford new tyres you have no business owning a car. in my state annual registration inspections would make that van unregisterable.

Times are hard. There is a house down the street from me that has been riding on a front spare tire for AT LEAST six months. And I know the person drives it because it is parked in a different spot everyday.

Yikes!

Was that a Verizon van?

BTW, the problem is that many won't budget tires over cigarettes, lottery tickets, beer, and drugs.

I find the yearly or every 2 year state inspections annoying, but it is there because many owners are incompetent.

Scary but true...

Looks like my tires currently on my f150, but I have a lightly used set of goodyear TD's going on it this friday. Used tires are cheap and better then the ones in the first pic, I got a set of TD's for $20 a tire and they still have 60-70% tread on them.

And I've ran tires until the cords have shown, I'm just a cheapy I think.
