Some repairs, you get your car back the way it was before it broke, an ECU, an alternator or such. It's like tossing money into a black hole with no improvement to the car. Other "repairs" improve your car, like brakes or in this case, tires...so I really don't mind spending the money on something like that.
This made me chuckle. A buddy and I were having a similar conversation about home repairs. Windows, roof, caulking or re-pointing - you just stop water from coming in and put things "back" like they used to be. Kitchen and bath renos are at least something that looks like an improvement. We both had little choice but to replace some windows in our house in the last year and it's really expensive. Even after spending all that money you don't tell your friends "come over and check out my new windows - they're awesome!".
Unfortunately you still need to keep the weather out and the first category of spending is still necessary. Two part epoxy wood filler was my best friend to keep them weather tight for a couple more years though...
