Thinner oils are definitely better

Well, I woke up this morning and suddenly realized that all thinner oils are better than their more viscous counterparts. My new Toyota Rav4 with the 5w20 & 4cyl is by far the quietest and smoothest engine in the fleet. All others are 5w30. I do believe that oil flow is the key to less wear and that all cars should be switched to 0w20 and that the oil manufacturers should seriously consider a 0w10 or even a 0w5 oil for all the new vehicles.

Your sig. says you are an engineer and I wouldn't expect an engineer to jump to a broad conclusion like that based on your one vehicle.

That would be his profile said engineer. And, he did not say who he was an engineer for. Just might be a thin oil company.

Consider todays date to also be part of the reasoning.
Lets all use -50W0 today. Or heat your oil on the stove each morning and install it hot, before driving to work.
Drain at work, keep it in your thermos bottle during the day.

(remember to label your thermos bottles, one should say "Oil", one should say "coffee"

No more cold wear problems!!

I run 5w20 in my Tacoma 4.0L and I have to say that it's smoother than 5w30. I used 10w30 a few months back and didn't like the way the motor dragged. To me, 5w20 is working.

+1

I just finished taking the fuel injection system off my car and installing a carburetor because everybody knows EFI was only to meet mileage and emissions standards, so it couldnt be better, I also filled my DOHC 24 valve with 10w-40

This is a little bit off topic, sort of.

I think that thinner may be the way to go as well and was considering mixing 75% 0W20 with 25% distilled water. It will be interesting to see the UOA....

You did get one or two to come forward testifying to the 'smoothness' of thinner oil over thicker. A butt dyno is used to detect more power. What part of the human anatomy is used to detect greater smoothness?

Give me strength.
