Sounds like me in HS.

For my hard work I was rewarded with an 81 Volvo wagon with rusty floor boards, and a finniky SU carb.

How about the new 2014 Forester? Great safety ratings and good mpg with the CVT. I'd never buy a vehicle if I thought the engine or trans wouldn't make it to 100k (so I'm saying the warranty doesn't sway me at all and you could always purchase one for any make/model).

That just seems like a lot of car (size and price) for a daughter in school (whether HS or college). IMO - buy something nice for $10-15k, put the rest in a mutual fund. She would appreciate that much more in the future, but that's delayed gratification and goes against most American principals.
