I finally got my Amsoil EaBP90 & BP-80a plumbed in my old Audi last night.

Now I'm thinking back to the last time I had the V/C off and all the crud I saw. If I pour a bottle of Auto-RX in for 1500 miles, would I be best off to leave the bypass installed, and change it out after the treatment? Or would it be likely clog up within a few days?

What kind of bypass?

If you have cheap media like toilet paper, I would leave it on and change it more regularly..

Carefully touch the side of the container after a decent drive and see if it is warm. If it isn't, replace the T.P.

Do that until it stays warm, or when you usually change it.

Yeah, so I need to read first.

Duh.

Still do the hand method, but ignore my ignorant question of "what kind of bypass"

If you wanted to leave the bypass stuff in place while you did an AutoRX treatment I guess you could use a full flow filter in place of the bypass filter. This way you would not be wasting the bypass filter.

KW - That's a great idea! I didn't think about that. A 5.9 Cummins filter on there while in the cleaning stage should work great.

Unfortunately, the only place to mount the filter in the engine bay was on the firewall, about 18" above the exhaust. It get's hot even without oil running through it.

Thinking about it some more... if it clogs up, that's a good thing (less trash to wear the motor), and if it doesn't clog, that's also a good thing ($35 still in my pocket). I'll probably install in a sampling valve on the return side. That'll let me monitor the flow more easily.

Not a bad idea ...but remember (I believe) you've got a 0.030 restrictor in the outlet side of the filter head. The ff filter may allow a particle in there that my clog it.

I'm just saying this so that when you're done ..and find that it doesn't work anymore (it may be fine) ..that you know where to look first.

being that your bypass is hanging close to the exhuast...have you thought about a heat shield??? Might be worth is ...even a poor mans version( aluminum foil wrapped to the bypass)

I was thinking about modifying a starter blanket to wrap around and cover the bottom of the filter. However, the car has a factory oil cooler, and oil temp guage has never gone over 95* C even in traffic and the 100* F+ days of Texas.

Those heat exchangers are just great. Whenever you check your blood pressure and temp ..it's pretty stable. Fast oil warmup ..and always gravitates to just under 100C. Everyone should have one of these. They just have so many +'s to them, imo.

Anyone (almost) that has a 3/4-16 thread filter can use one of these.
