I wonder how often they even sell a jug of that up here? Probably only to people with 1960s muscle cars (or British cars of that era, to stop the oil burning)

It's crazy how much 20w-50 we sell at the parts store. I talk so many people out of buying that super thick oil for their fairly new car. If the computer says it specifies 5w-20, it doesn't burn or leak oil, then stick with that or maybe go to a 5w-30... But don't put in 20w-50 just because! Lol.

i like thick but depending on your local weather 20W50 WILL NOT let your engine start!! even Amsoil i ran in the past cranked so slow in my traded hardley it killed the battery first. many forget or ignore their local driving environment when choosing oil viscosity. back in the 70's my oil drinking 307 nova got the val 20W50 conventional due to high consumption, it was about 2010 when i was surprised the Amsoil did not work so i wonder if they already were blending in group III's instead of costlier PAO with better cold flow

I remember years back when all the parts stores (Walmart included) carried every brand in every viscosity offered. I guess 10W30 is "the new thick" whereas it was once the "thin gas mileage oil".

Can't say how many millions of Oz engines made it to 300,000km running 20W50 dino. (Parents R16 made it to 250,000 miles before the speedo stopped working on GTX or XLD)

When oil consumption got to 1qt/3,000 miles, you would start to think about a refresh, nobody ever considered 1qt/1,000 as anything but a manufacturing defect.

The first oil I ever purchased with my own money was GTX 20W50, my air-cooled thumper (motorcycle) chewed it up very quickly, so I move up to Penrite HPR30 (a 20W60 with a TBN of 11.1 and 1530 ppm zinc). That worked nicely ....

Jeez, I'd never use anything that thick, I've got 15W-60 in the Volvo...I don't think it'd even run on 20W-60 !

Yep, my parents bought a new 1981 Mazda 929, went well over 300,000km using 20w50 GTX...even a 17 year old revhead (me!) couldn't kill the poor thing! Never had a problem firing up even on 0 degree Celsius mornings. The way some people here carry on about it, you'd think 20w50 has the consistency of wet cement.
