Had to deal with one recently. Like one video I watched, on a certain new model that requires the filter be replaced every 6 months, he said you can install it and never run water through it and at 6 months it says to replace it, and will shut off the water for ice, drinking etc.
At least the older units aren't that capable, but still, if they use an RFID chip they could cause other issues I would think, if they were programmed to do such.

I have a seven year old Maytag fridge and get two or three from Amazon generic (aquacrest?) and they work fine. Daughter has a Kitchenaid fridge and needed one soonest $49 at Lowe's last year. I also purchase for my sister's Frigidaire from Amazon or walmart.com and get a Frigidaire branded filter fairly cheap. Think they all last 300 gallons min, so about once per year. No rfid. YMMV

I use my Zero Water filter for the most part as it's the only five stage water filter. My parents new Whirlpool fridge is amazing but I'm not thrilled with the cost. Depending on use it's been a roughly 6 month filter between replacement. My Zero Water filter usually lasts 3 months.

I have a Maytag refrigerator that requires a water filter. We have very good water that doesn't need filtering so I bought a "filter delete" insert that fits where the filter would fit.

The fridge periodically asks for a new filter and I simply reset it and carry on. Have been doing this for about 10 years.

We have KitchenAid fridge and all it takes to 'reset' is to press and hold 'filter' button for a few moments. The replace-me-light comes on every 6 months but we don't use fridge water much so I run filter full year. Funny thing is it has 'air' filter light too but no filter.

The filter on my Thermador ice maker lasts 8+ years before I notice the ice production slowing.

The one video shows how the guy does the by pass plug, then gets a filter that will last 5 years and attaches to the rear of the refrig and of course the lines that run from the H2o supply to the filter then to the refrig, I think he said it was under $30 on amazon years ago 2?? I forget.

Meh. No water to the fridge here. No filters, no getting caught by the manufacturer. We just keep a container of ice tea and cold water in the fridge and have a one year filter on the cold tap at the sink. Lots easier.

my whirlpool fridge doesn't use rfid chipped filters but the filter minder is just a pre-programmed calendar set to trigger in intervals indicating when to change the filter say 3-4 months goes orange 4-6 months goes red to change. if my water doesn't taste funny and no flow restriction I have ran filters closer to the 1 year window. its purely a business sales pitch by the manufacturer and good housekeeping. I have watched apartment maintenance videos on youtube there's a tech that goes as far as soldering in green led's so regardless of the predetermined calendar built in it's constantly green.

I just use the bypass that came with the fridge. Water line comes from the RO system, so much better than what the little charcoal filter can do.

I just use knock off filters now. In my current house, only in 3 yrs. now, new fridge filter didn't make it 6 months before plugging up. Once I got the iron filter running and installed a whole house sediment filter (well water) everything is fine. I just do a reset and can get a year out of a filter, I just replace for taste.

Home depot sells the HDX store brand filters that are a little cheaper that the others. Often in a twin pack.

That's what I do too. I have the same Whirlpool sidexsides in both our primary home and our beach house. No RFID chips and the well rated ones(whatever that's worth)on Amazon are about $10 each.
I purge them with 2-3 gallons of water after replacement. No issues. Water and ice are fine.

Buy yourself a TDS meter, then test the water from your faucet vs the water from your fridge and you'll probably never buy another fridge filter.
