Parents have a water filter installed.

Does a great job, getting chlorine byproducts out of the water, so this most certainly isn't a complaint.

They had a doorknocker, giving them a water filter, which they had "won" (somehow).

Filter service company rings them every 12 months to remind them that a service is due (at $120).

Not a bad business model if you can pull it off.

At least we have water filters these days,In the '50's and '60's the water at my Grandmother's house came out of the tap white, and stunk! We had to let it sit for a while to go clear.Lucky she made a mean ginger beer.

I don't know when they got mains water, but must have been early '50's as I only remember a flush toilet and tap water. There was an old septic mushroom in the back yard, but no trace of a rain water tank.It was a long way across farm land to put water and sewage into such a remote area back then - but now it is classed as an expensive inner city suburb.Someone could think ahead.
