I play drums for fun but my 18 year old is phenomenal drummer who took up drums at 8. He took drum lessons religiously for 10 years until he graduated high school and he would play minimally 2-3 hours per day for years - he was obsessive about it. Prog rock, heavy metal, speed metal, 60s, 70s, 80, 90s rock and grunge, jazz, you name it, he plays it well. He has some of the quickest hands and feet I've ever heard plus his pocket position is always perfect. He can even read and write music.
He has a band that plays all original content and besides the singer/guitar player who is absolutely terrible at singing but great at guitar, they are really good. They constantly play the local scene but he knows it is highly unlikely he'll ever be able to make a living from his talent. The sad thing is much less talented but more marketable musicians will get deals before he does.
My favorite drummer is Danny Carey, he's a generational drummer, and I'm not sure he'd have career if he was starting out now.
