The next version of Windows: Windows 7

I agree with alot you say in your last post Mystic.

Linux does not support all hardware. Each kernel update includes more hardware support. If you are planning to buy hardware and want to use linux a little research is in order.

Linux does offer many alternatives to windows programs. This is nice but most window's users do not want to learn how to use new programs and this is understandable. You can run window's programs in linux with emulators but this is not the greatest scenario.

I keep the best of both worlds. I cannot program my vhf radio with linux. The software is made for windows. Dual booting Windows and linux is easy and mostly automatic with linux installs.

You do not have to install linux. Live cds are a terrific way to try linux and check hardware compatibility. All of my installs are from live cds nowadays.

It all boils down to what you need to do with an operating system. Everyone's needs are different. For the mainstream user linux offers plenty of easy to use programs for all the everyday tasks.

With web services growing, who cares what runs what. The desk top is getting thinner and thinner. I lot of things will change between now and three years from now. We used to play the tape of Bill Gates saying that the Internet would not amount to much, ever, and would not be a big part of their plans in the future. Maybe it's just me but he was a bit off the target and to his credit, he changed his mind.

The free Ubuntu or Kubuntu Linux Desktop Operating system comes with The Gimp (GNU General Public License). It has been ported from Linux and is now available in GIMP for UNIX (including Linux), GIMP for Windows, & GIMP for MacOS X.

GIMP is a GNU Image Manipulation Program. It is a freely distributed piece of software for such tasks as photo retouching, image composition and image authoring. Works on many operating systems, in many languages. Compare to Photoshop - just as useful.

A search if Google will give you much info about The Gimp.

Know this is kind of beating a dead horse but if you install Wine on your Linux Box, you can install and use Photoshop, Internet Explorer, etc.

Link Regarding Wine

I also recommend that you install Miscosoft TrueType Fronts.

From the Terminal enter the following command if you are running a Ubuntu version or modify if another.

sudo apt-get install msttcorefonts cabextract and then hit enter.

Easy way to install Wine, etc., is by first installing Automatix. The link was previously posted by one of our members.

Sr, Automatix allows you to install trial version of Codeweavers Basic and Commercial, a commercially supported implementation of WINE. Check out their website for the Windoze apps they support.

IMHO, this is a sure fire way to get people annoyed with Linux. Anyone who "needs" IE or Photoshop should just run dual boot or a VM. Trying to get Windoze apps to run under Linux is not a particularly rewarding task. I find the "full immersion" linux technique the best, just start using native linux apps for everything....

It wold be very hard to catch up to Windows. Microsoft has a billion operating system lead. But Linux, as samll as it is right now, could become competitive if the Linux people make the right moves.

Remember, Linux will run on Windows computers. If a really fantastic version of Linux came out that was low cost and could truly fulfill the needs of even people who do extensive computer graphics, people could download the Linux or buy CD-Rs or DVD-Rs and simply replace the Windows that came on their computer.

But the Linux people have to come through. Based on their performance so far I am not optimistic.

The only real competition right now to Windows is Mac OS X. But I am becoming increasingly nervous about what is going on with the Mac. Apple taking 'Computer' out of their corporate name did not help. And when I received MacZone and there were all kinds of ads for Windows computers and servers I was shocked.

Assuming Apple does not do something like dropping Mac OS X my guess is Apple could eventually be 10% of the market or so. In the USA they are 6.5% but in the world as a whole they are only about 2%.

I don't like the handwriting on the wall concerning Apple.

Is paraphrasing and posting this same tirade every day a compulsion or a hobby? Why don't you just post links to previous versions of your post? In case I'm disturbing a hobby of yours, I apologize. Everyone should have a fulfilling hobby.

I keep reading same commentary over and over. These excerpts are only from this one thread right here:

I have a bad feeling that Apple may totally become a consumer electronics company and simply dump Mac OS X.

#943612 - 21:46 23/07/2007
But Apple fans need to take a look around at some things that are going on. How did you feel when Apple dropped the word 'Computer' from its corporate name? I don't know about you but it put a little ice in my veins.

I am seriously worried today. A lot of strange handwriting on the wall. I received my most recent MacZone catalog just a short time ago. A lot of Apple Mac people get their gear and software through MacZone and MacConnection, and of course from Apple directly and the Apple Stores. The MacZone catalog I received had only a few ads for new Mac computers.

I have no clue what Apple Inc plans for the future. Apple is very secret about future plans. But if the plan is to someday pull the rug out from all of those loyal customers I am not going to be there.

Don't you mean machines with the x86 architecture? Yes, Linux will run on x86, x86-64, PowerPC, Sparc, Ultrasparc, PA-Risc, Motorola 68000 and many others, making it ideal for target markets such as telco.

Windows runs on x86 only and if you have enough money x86-64
No sign of a telco version of Windows.

Some people do no not have a large investment in Apple hardware and software and third party software made for the Apple Macintosh operating system. If I had an Apple Computer that maybe I had bought used and did not have an investment in software made for the Mac OS X operating system, and if I used my computer just for the internet, email, and maybe typing up the occasional letter, I would not worry very much about any news affecting Apple. It would actually benefit me if Mac OS X was discontinued because I would be even less of a target for the bad guys.

On the other hand some people have a large investment in Apple computers and Apple software and third party software made for Mac OS X. Some people depend on Apple Computers for their businesses. For example, a businessman might own a computer graphics design company and depend on several Mac computers and expensive software made for those Macs like Adobe Photoshop. These people have to be concerned about anything that affects their investments.

I don't know if you have ever visited a MacForum. I know of several websites for Mac people. When Apple dropped 'Computer' from their corporate name there was a lot of anger, confusion, worry about the future, etc. Not just me-a lot of people.

People who buy hardware and software for the Mac usually buy from Apple directly, Apple Stores, MacZone and MacConnection. In addition there are a few independent stores still in existence. I receive MacZone and MacConnection catalogs all the time. I have not yet received the latest MacConnection but I did receive a MacZone just a short time ago. There were all kinds of ads for Windows computers and to the best of my memory I have never seen anything like that.

Now if I did not have an investment in hardware and software for the Apple I would not care. Anything happening to the Apple Computer or Mac OS X would merely make me even less of a target for the bad guys.

But since I do have an investment in hardware and software for the Mac I do have a right to be concerned. I don't know what Apple Inc. plans for the future. I don't get invited to the executive meetings.

One thing I do know is that it is likely that Microsoft is going to be around for a while. And Photoshop can run quite well in Windows. Apple Inc. needs me. I don't need Apple Inc. I have a choice. And if things continue to get stranger and if I don't receive any assurances I will make that choice. And I don't think it will be just me either. At least, judging from the last Mac Forum I visited.

Things are getting stranger at Apple? How?

We're buying more & more of these things.

So what if they dropped the "Computer" from their name. Dell nor HP nor Microsoft have "Computer" in their names either! Apple is diversifying, and that will include computers.

Are you saying that Apple is going to stop offering computers? That's just silly. They would let down and entire culture and more importantly, lose all that revenue, and MOST importantly, lose the religion. It's NOT going to happen.

We need a Mystic "Apple" thread that's pinned.
