The new Supertech 9972 (Toyota cartridge filter) is rather impressive

Downside would be if Champ purchased bulk media that is less efficient (such as what was used in Wix XP) and is using it on the cheaper filters.

Any way to tell for sure that this is the good media used in the more expensive filters?

ISO testing… but good luck getting it done. Next best would be hoping BrandRanks does a video which includes it, but unfortunately they don’t test cartridge style.

Think I've seen a wire backed Super Tech before but that must of been a different part number than this model number. Champ advertises most of their filters 99%@30 but individual ones might be better or worse lol. Is this a smaller filter?

In general Yes, Just note there are some Super Techs that appear to be the same as Fram PH line but the Super Tech doesn't have silicon adbv while PH Fram does.

The SuperTech is rated at 99% @ 30u, so most likely in the neighborhood of 60-70% @ 20u ... maybe 80% @ 20u. Every filter's efficiency falls off differently as the particle size gets smaller.

Your rough math assumes a linear filtration relationship. The filter is unlikely to be performing anywhere close to 66% at 20 microns.

I know the efficiency curve is not straightforward hence "Rough Math". Without the data rough math is all you get.

No, Toyota OEM cartridges same as their spin on is no endcap type. Many of the aftermarket cartridges like topic use the endcap type design. As long as they have proper fit in housing work equally well to the OEM.

On efficiency of the topic cartridge., seeing as it's seemingly a different media, 'my speculation'; is it could be different than standard Champ/ST rating of spin on/cartridge.

As for some guesstimation of what one efficiency at some micron level based on what it is at some other micron level,' 'I' am not confident in reliability of extrapolation. My thought has been, if knowing the efficiency of a filter at a specific micron level a priority, buy a filter that publishes it at that level. Otherwise, just use it and don't sweat it.

If a filter is ISO rated at 99% @ 30u, the efficiency is going to be falling off pretty good (quicker than linear) as the parties become smaller and smaller below 30u. The ISO efficiency test data by Ascent shows how filters typically fall-off from their 99% @ xx microns starting point. Media type can have an effect on the efficiency fall-off curve shape.

95% @ 20u may be pretty close to 99% @ 30u, but probably a bit better below 20u if you could see the entire efficiency vs particle size curve. And it still has a silicone ADBV (there was a period it was nitrile due to supply chain issues). It's a good choice if people don't hate the fiber end caps and/or the brand, and don't use it for long OCIs.

It would go a 10K OCI on a clean engine. The rating is "up to 10K miles". If you want some headroom on a clean engine then run it 5K to 7500 miles. If the engine is relatively "dirty", run it less than 5K.

I concur with the comments above that this ST9972 filter is built well. However, I'm not quite sure what benefit the wire mesh provides. The cartridge fits onto a metal tube in the Toyota filter housing, and this tube would therefore provide plenty of support. Or could the media slide around on the tube if it wasn't attached to the mesh?
