The new Supertech 9972 (Toyota cartridge filter) is rather impressive

I concur with the comments above that this ST9972 filter is built well. However, I'm not quite sure what benefit the wire mesh provides. The cartridge fits onto a metal tube in the Toyota filter housing, and this tube would therefore provide plenty of support. Or could the media slide around on the tube if it wasn't attached to the mesh?
On the flip side, what does it hurt at that price point?

Agreed. As long as the efficiency is acceptable, the extra stout build hurts nothing. I'm just surprised the ST is built like the Fram FE. In most other applications the ST filters are identical, or nearly so, to ACDelco offerings.

I was checking out filters at Walmart today and I inspected the new version of the Supertech 10k rated 9972 made for Toyotas. I was impressed.

It’s wire backed, has a metal crimp seam, very good pleat spacing, and perfect gluing.

The box says it’s still rated 99% at 30 microns, but given what I’m seeing here I wouldn’t be surprised if it were actually better than that and they just haven’t changed the printing on the boxes. This is about the closest thing I have found to the Fram Endurance and Amsoil filters. And it’s only $3.

Here are some pics:

And for comparison here’s a Fram Endurance with less even pleat spacing and sloppier glue:

I know this is an old thread, but I am evaluating the same now. But the filter you have, has bad reviews on the Walmart site. The compressed cotton kinda fiber seems to disintegrate after a while. But the filter made later which are brown in color are sturdier and probably made of some synthetic fiber.

I think it’s the other way around. The white ones are new, the brown ones are old.

This is a quote from Walmart reviews and its for a different filter model I must admit.

"First let me start by saying, I'm not a Walmart hater. I think Walmart does a good job of providing quality products at affordable costs. This review is not critical of Walmart, but a warning that something is wrong with the ST0018 oil filter. I changed my oil today with a ST0018 filter I purchased 6 weeks ago. The oil change had 4600 miles on it and was 5W-30 Full Syn. The paper element has disintegrated and put paper fibers in my oil. With some fibers missing, I'm sure the oil over the last 6 weeks has not been filtered as well. Please contact the factory. The oil filters in production now are defective. I also noticed the filter media has changed. The oil media was yellow and made from stiff paper. The new media is white and fuzzy. So, someone changed the media and it is not working. If a Walmart Rep reads this, please contact me, I will be happy to give you all of the info you need for the factory. Paper filter media in the oil can clog the oil ring on you engine's pistons and cause you engine. $7,000.00 for a new one. This is an important message please take it as so."

Many errors here and no relation to the 9972. I was so close to buying some of them and using my 2GR-FE to test them, but I changed my mind; the 27047 works just fine. ⬇️

I just searched the Walmart website and could not find a ST0018 oil filter. I question the validity of this Walmart reviewer. I found the review on the Walmart website. “ST0018” appears in the title of the review and twice in the text. I don’t think it’s a typo.

Very nice! I hope they also start doing that filter media for the ST10158 (Toyota 5th gen 4Runner and more) part number, assuming it filters as well as it looks like it does.

Exactly, see my previous post (#47), inaccuracies are all over that review. I might pick up some 9972's just for the heck of it.
I usually pre-fill my filter housing with a 9972 filter the nite before an oil change. Since the Venza 2gr-fe is not due for a 5K filter change (note: doing a HPL euro 5w-30 10k OCI) until spring 2025, I can soak the new white media ST9972 in HPL oil and see what happens in several months. I just got to find a glass wide mouth container.

I’ll put one in the Rav4 with 2gr-fe and run it 5000 miles and report back.

Could be an old review. But I was just curious about the filter membrane type and color rather than the model itself. I gather the white cotton type one is bad and the brown thick filter type is good?

Not necessarily. Let’s not draw any premature conclusions yet.

Cite the reviews with links. Don't just "talk" about them.

Everyone by now knows sellers of competing goods create false reviews. No one could compete with that Walmart price, and it dings sales, especially for the overseas made cheap filters. Unless there are pictures and more reviews with more pictures showing the same. Like people do here when one filter is found bad.
