The feel of the switches, the lack of road feel, the cheapness of the plastic (every single car has a plastic interior,, but they're not all the same) and the sound of the mechanicals doing their job just doesn't reach out and grab the interest of many people. I compare buying a GM car to buying a lawn mower when your only criteria for the purchase is deck width and engine power. If you can't tell the difference in the build of a John Deere (the real ones and not the cheapened versions at HD) over a Dynamark then the General will fill your bill admirably.
Please don't take this post as a insult to GM. I am just stating that some people prefer a higher level of refinement in their products. With this in mind I'd like to note that I have used my total piece of junk Volkswagen Rabbit to shuttle my friends back and forth to the Mercedes dealership while they got their $50,000 E-class repaired. Does this mean my Rabbit is better than their Mercedes? When you're standing on the side of the road with a broken down car it would surely appear that way.
I can guarantee you though, the new Malibu is years ahead of the 03 models. We happen to have both kinds and brand new. I wish my Z28 had the quality interior of these new Malibus.
