WOW! I'm seeing the question about Mobil 1 switching from Group IV, to Group III, appearing on the net, more & more!!!

A lot of links to BITOG, too!!!

It seems like a lot of people who aren't really too "oilish"

, but had trusted this "synthetic" bedrock, are even getting curious, if not angry.

It seems a lot of people bought the Castrol hype of years back, only to learn they were paying the same price, for an oil that had been dropped a notch in performance, as compared to what the Euros were getting. I think if Mobil is guilty of the same crime, they are making themselves a nasty bed to nap in.

I see a lot of people asking about Royal Purple, and also, looking for ways to buy Redline cheapest on-line.

So, what it the latest verdict on the Mobil 1

The latest "verdict" on Mobil 1 (EP) is that those who want to believe the worst are turning cartwheels in their zeal to do so. The fact that the original thread has been taken down should be mute evidence to anyone with half a brain that there's something going on behind the scenes here. I've implied it before, but I'll state it plainly: BITOG has become a clearing house for speculation and rumor presented (and often embraced) as fact.

The original thread is gone? Wow. I agree though, this is far from the only forum that offers tons of chaff that people buy as wheat. I think what made this thing so explosive was Tom's credentials and experience compounded by Mobil's refusal to plainly state what they're been implying for years. I don't see how that'd compromise their formula.

Hi Ray,

The thread remains, but was locked by the moderators. I was very surprised about that and sent a PM to G-Man to ask why. He said that the thread had run its course and he was afraid that it was going to get personal, and I believe he repeated that on the board.

Nothing at all behind the scenes, and I stand on my reports. I just don't want to open another can of worms and scare my customers, so I decided not to post additional base oil results.

Tom

Then there are those of us who have been loyal to Mobil 1 for years and don't want to believe it, that are feeling very betrayed. We wanted to believe that ex-Mobil 1 was every bit the product that Mobil 1 was. But we now have some evidence, from a reliable source, that it is not.

The main reason I locked it because the comments were turning personal against you.

I agree with the lockdown, but thought the post should have been "stickied" at the top of the forum for a while due to its importance. I even sent G-Man a PM requesting that.

I spoke with a technical rep at Mobil today for about 5 minutes and asked him if M1 was a group III or groupIV oil. He said very plainly that M1 is definitely a group IV full synthetic lubricant and contains NO mineral base stocks but contains ONLY PAO base stocks and additive packages that are different with each viscosity. He was very certain about it because I asked him twice. He then said that none of the mobil synthetic oils contained any mineral base stocks. I believe him.

"I believe him."

I'm not saying you or he are wrong, but, I would like to whatever is in this or anyother oil on the lable.

That is interesting, I wonder how long ago he asked the question?

I wish I knew. I've asked the engineers the same questions you have since I use M1 in my cars. When I asked the point-blank question "Do any of the components of M1 come from the refinery (i.e. conventional oils)?", I got a very definite "No! All base oil components are manufactured in the chem plant". Now, I will say that I don't know as much about M1 EP and it may be a synthetic/Group III blend but "classic" M1 is still PAO based. I'll have to see what I can find out about EP.

I was surfing at a Mustang site and ran across this post by TomServo92. http://forums.bradbarnett.net/showthread.php?t=54837&page=2 I think I will PM him and ask him to check in here

He says that "classsic" M1 definitely does not have Group III, but that EP may have some (he is not 100% certain). This is based on his conversations with the engineers at the plant. Why would the more expensive EP version have Group III blended in?

Could it be that 100% PAO are no longer the gold standard? And could it be possible that the ever improving Group III "synthetic's" when blended with Group 4 and 5 gives the best attributes of each, resulting in a overall superior product. Hey these guys and gals at the oil companies are doing the testing, and are not going to let the other company sell more oil, because they lose their quality image. Heck, this may even be good for us in a pro-active sort of way.

Then again I tend to be an optimus.

Not sure what you are getting at Ray, but there is nothing going on behind the scenes here at Bitog. None of us profit by modding here, we do it simply for the love of the site. GMan locked the original thread due to personal attacks. You guys can discuss away all you want, just keep it civil, Joe
