The Internal Combustion Engine of 2030

Looking at my crystal ball, 15 years from now, 90% of passenger vehicle internal combustion engines will have all these "top ten" features (some of these features are obviously currently available):

1. Under 1.5L, 3 or 4 cylinder
2. Rolling cylinder deactivation
3. Both turbocharged and supercharged
3. Gasoline compression ignition
4. Start-stop
5. Variable valve lift
6. Variable valve timing
7. Variable valve duration
8. Variable displacement oil pumps and water pumps
9. Direct injection
10. Incapable of being repaired by 80% of automotive technicians

Feel free to add any features I did not think of.

a) Electronically controlled valves

b)Exotic alloy blocks and heads which allow higher operating temps

c)Removal of the spark plug ground electrode , the spark will discharge on an alloy disc cast into the piston crown Fuel ignition will be controlled by the injection sequence.

d) the engines will be disposable
 
11. Engine not repairable, replace with reman(like today's CVT's)

12. Direct injection will be extinct, will not resolve the buildup issue, instead there will be two or more injectors per cylinder, with finer mist running at extremely high pressure.

13. Gas engines are obsolete, Tesla/Nissan/Ford/Toyota new electrics and hydrogen's have 40% of the market.

14. CVT's will be obsoleted, all transmissions will be electric motors, like today's Prius.

15. Higher MPG, yet smaller gas tanks!

16. Large Oil companies exiting from the Gas station business, more off branding of this "legacy" service. More stations will be known as "Circle K" and not as the "Shell/Marathon/etc."

off topic but Detroit Diesel in the 1980s had their 2 stroke diesels supercharged to let the engine start and turboed to give it power and other than being Detroit Diesels, they were very powerful for their displacement.

Nowadays engines (especially turbodiesels) have one injector that does the same....google multiple injection
 
Gasoline engine drives generator, powers electric motors in each wheel hub. Allows computer controlled variable power to each wheel, allowing faster and more accurate stability control. Also eliminates transmission, driveshafts, ect. saving weight. Engine can run in narrower powerband, charging batteries when able, drawing off when extra power needed.
 
So this isn't really "what might happen in 15 years" it's more of "what I wish I had in a car right now", sound about right OP?

I right now would buy a hellcat engine in either a Challenger or Charger if I could buy one at dealer cost. I won't buy a vehicle unless it is at dealer cost. The dealer still makes some $$$$.
 
I reckon Tesla or any company that makes electric cars should also design a solar carport that charges a battery, that then charges your car at night. Or a solar power pack similar to their house battery thingy if you have a garage.
Solar panels on the car roof would add a lot of range too, parked up in summer it could just slowly charge it's self.
I can't see the internal combustion engine being replaced too soon though because oil is still big business!
 
It takes lots of power to charge an electric car. Would the grid hold up to all the cars being charged at night? maybe, maybe not. Kinda pricy but Teslas cars seem really nice.

Relic of the past.

Someone will invent a long charge battery with quick charge.

I hope by then that an auto drive car will pick me up and take me where I want to go and then leave until called.

I agree with this, new battery designs come out every few years that make the previous generations of batteries look like they run on coal.
A less exciting, more civillian electric car than the insanely fast Teslas would use and need a lot less power and could even efficiently be charged through solar power at your own house
Tesla should make a small, affordable electric compact/hatchback with a solar panel roof. Make it perform more like a gasoline hatchback instead of a Ferrari and it could have a great range and not use much power to charge
 
And i'll be clining to my 4.0 heep engine, installing a custom pipe with a heat plate and oil injection into it to piess off the hippies. A diesel cloud out of a chipped 12 valve will be a breath of fresh air.

Think the advances of the insight engine taken to the cutting edge

2.8l v6 for trucks 1.7 l inline 5, 1.4l and less inline 4/3 for cars

I think homogeneous charge combustion ignition will come to fruition. More manufactures will offset crankshaft to bore relation like the insight (more torque) ceramic bores and piston coatings will reduce friction
Pneumatic or electronic valves will replace the camshaft. Turbo or super or both on everything. Turbosupercompounding might make it back into the loop. electric accessories.
Kei car motors expanded, for gas only cars
Engines that make a piped two strokes power band seem wide for the range extender engines if they are still needed
