The Honda Oil Filter Thread

I wouldn't want to sacrifice a new one but it would be nice to get a C&P when you are done using it. At least it can be compared to the previous versions and other models like the PG's.
ask and you shall receive... nothing fancy about the 15400-RTA-003

A few days ago, I asked chatgpt what are the longer oil filters with more filtering media and the same bypass pressure for the relief valve, for use on my Honda K24w engine, instead of the Fram XG7317.

It answered that none with the same bypass pressure relief existed.

It listed a few that were slightly longer but listed that the bypass pressure was not the same.

So, you may want to pay attention to what the relief pressure is when looking at other filters.

The XG7317 is plenty large enough for that engine with normal OCIs. It's still rated to 20K miles. The Endurance is rated to 25K miles.

I'm super curious if anyone here has tried the oversized Microgard Select MSL51626 or similarly sized filter. Would love to know how it went for them.

Not liking what I'm seeing on the OEM Honda filter, with the cardboard end caps. Glad my OEM Honda filter stash is almost depleted. I believe the 15400-A02. Will be moving on to my Mahle stash..,,,,then a stash of Renken. Will take me years to use up the Mahle's and Renken's. Vehicle not used that much anymore. I'm retired, so is the car, pretty much. Good back up vehicle for my wife who is still working, in case something goes wrong with her beater. Still, both cars get 3month / 3k oil and filter changes. She's running the 03' Solara with the 2AZ-FE engine / 130k. I got the other beater, 13'CRV / 615K with the K-24 engine. Just started using Schaeffer's EP Moly treatment in them. Learned about that stuff on BITOG. Excellent reviews on the internet also. Gotta keep the beaters running. Low on $$$$ for newer vehicles.

Yes, I know that. The bean counters were not stickin their noses into everything on the older cars. I'm convinced that's why their is expensive garbage being sold now. No problems with the beaters, and their easier to work on. The 03' Solara has only 3 computers in it. Today's cars have 40-50 computers. The way I see it, it's just more to go wrong/break. Gets great gas mileage too ! Have an 06' Camry with the same engine. Also easy to work on. The 13' CRV with that K-24 engine is just amazing.

Man, if I went and searched the phrase 'bean counter' on here, probably 80% of the results would come from your posts :ROFLMAO:. I don't blame you for your grudge against them, it is what got us to this place in automotive evolution. CAN-BUS came out as a federal standard in 2007 or so. Right before I exited the auto repair world as a profession. I am keeping my 2012 CR-V and hoping to get the mileage yours has and even beyond.

LOL....Yeah , I have a problem using bean counters. Best of luck with you're 2012 CRV. The K-24 is an amazing engine. I used nothing but 0W20 synthetic and no high efficient oil filters. 3k oil and filter changes.

man i really do miss being able to get the A01 filters. They were by far the best. Just glad I still have about 10-15 of them left and only save them for my personal cars. ;)

I miss the A01 also. I ran out quite some time ago. Filtrete made a great filter. You're not to far from me, I'm gonna steal them !!! LOL :). Enjoy them while you can. I actually did a B.S. weight test with my hands between the A01 & A02. What a difference !!!!!! The A01 was way heavier. ( sorry, I have no scale ).

Well, that got Filtrete beat by 10 miles. Made in Japan. Don't get much better than that. Didn't even know they made an RTA filter. My first Honda was in 2013. Everything prior was GM......then I got a bad burn from GM. Once burned, twice learned. Was RTA an OEM Honda filter back in the day ?????

It might be a contrarian view here on BITOG, but I think that is a very well-made filter with a very effective design. It has a nice large bypass well up into the center tube. While the end caps are fiber (not paper per se-- it's a close to hardboard/masonite as it is to paper--this design maximizes the use of available space claim and lets the media go almost all the way to the end of the can.

This allows more media length within the same can. The fiber end caps are much easier to get the glue to adhere to, assuring structural integrity with minimal glue.

If these were widely available, I'd buy a bunch.
