Does anyone know when we can expect the reformulated 5W-30 EP with the SP/GF6 rating to hit the market ?

Usually takes a good 2-3 months before existing inventory is gone. New bottles etc. I'd expect in the month or so?

I purchased mine not too long ago at Walmart. There was sufficient stock and it was prominently placed as well unlike months ago when it was on the very top shelf.

This is what confuses me. Six months ago the AP was collecting dust on the top shelf and limited stock was available. Now I see three grades with about six jugs each sitting on a eye level shelf which is prime real estate yet the word is that Mobil is discontinuing it.

It does make sense for Mobil to consolidate product lines. There are too many.

1. As the article states, no one wants to pay $50 for 5 QTs of oil; had they placed it squarely at $35 (which is where most of the stores that carried it discounted it to to move it initially), it would have had a better start out of the gate.
2. Mobil has too many "clashing" product lines without clarity as to what one lines does better than the other OR instead of the other.

Prime examples:
-- Mobil Super Synthetic. What is this oil and where does it fit in the overall line up? It is usually only carried by auto parts and grocery stores at a price per quart that most people walk right past. Why would i choose it over any other Mobil product?
-- Truck and SUV versus AFE and "regular" M1; what is the difference and which is better? Is there are difference or is this a marketing thing?
-- M1 EP High Mileage; who would choose this oil over the standard high mileage version?

Below is the current Mobil "1" synthetic PCMO line. Does Mobil need this many oils to cover the market or would it behoove them to simplify the line?
21.gif

Mobil 1â„¢ (5w-20 | 5w-30 | 10w-30 | 15w-50)
Mobil 1â„¢ Advanced Fuel Economy (0W-16 | 0W-20 | 0W-30)
Mobil 1â„¢ Extended Performance oil (0W-20 | 5W-20 | 5W-30 | 10W-30)
Mobil 1â„¢ Annual Protection (0W-20 | 5W-20 | 5W-30)
Mobil 1â„¢ FS (0W-40 | 5W-50)
Mobil 1â„¢ ESP (0W-20 | 0W-30 | 0W-40 | 5W-30)
Mobil 1â„¢ Formula M (5W-40)
Mobil 1â„¢ Extended Performance High Mileage (0W-20 | 5W-20 | 5W-30)
Mobil 1â„¢ High Mileage (0W-20 | 5W-20 | 5W-30 | 10W-30 | 10W-40)
Mobil 1â„¢ Truck & SUV (0W-20 | 5W-20 | 5W-30)
Mobil Superâ„¢ Synthetic (0W-20 | 5W-20 | 5W-30)

I agree that it could be confusing, but the truth is I can easily find any of these oils in any of the available weights. They'd be harder to find if they didn't sell. I think people like to feel like they are customizing their vehicle, and the oil is no exception. The more choices you have, the more you feel you are getting a product that specifically addresses your desired need or performance.

If it didn't work, then why is Pennzoil now following suit? We've got:

Ultra Platinum
Platinum
Platinum High Mileage
Euro
Start/Stop
Maximum Power
Extended Care
Hybrid

The list isn't as long as M1 yet, but they seem to keep expanding it.

As for AP being a failure, I think that has proven out over time. It has found its place at 35 bucks a jug. Every Walmart I've been to has a huge display of it, along with many of the other M1 offerings. It has the best spot on the shelf, being the first you see when you walk down the aisle.

We don't know the whole story, but I'm betting they know what they are doing and that they are the big dog in the US market. That said, I do remember the simpler days when I'd grab Mobil 1 in the appropriate weight and knew it was their top product, no matter the application.

You all are talking about the elimination of Annual Protection from the Mobil 1 product line as if it is a done deal. Where is this information coming from? It makes sense, given it HAS been a marketing failure for Mobil - but I have not seen its discontinuance mentioned anywhere except here. So that's my first question - is this official or just rumor?

Second question - If they are going to eliminate Annual Protection and keep extended performance in the lineup, will the formulation of Annual Protection simply be labeled Extended Performance, or are they completely eliminating the Annual Protection formulation, or will they re-formulate Extended Performance? In other words, can I obtain the formulation of Annual Protection in the Extended Performance label after this change takes place?

They are guessing. AP sells very well in my area at Wallyworld. AP 0w20 is my fav for my newer Jeep. It appears to turn over as fast as any stock at the local stores and has the best shelf space location.

I doubt they drop any of them, but time will tell and if they do, it won't necessarily be because the article was right. It will likely have more to do with the pandemic and drop in demand causing cost-cutting measures.

As for Mobil Super or whatever they are calling it these days, it has its place, I'm sure. I'm no expert, but I wonder why they don't put an Exxon label on it. I remember Exxon Superflo oil. It was a cheap brand, IIRC, but well recognized. Are there still Exxon gas stations anywhere in the country? If so, it could still have some recognition. It could become to Exxon Mobil what Quaker State is to SOPUS. That's probably what they are shooting for, anyway. It is a good looking bottle, though. Probably a solid Group III synthetic.

Looks like Exxon Mobil has licensed the Exxon Superflo brand to Brenntag oil company. Interesting.

No, it's being dropped LOL. I had 3 Mobil tech people flat out tell me that. It's being phased out and EP will be the flagship oil.

Well, if Mobil reps are saying it, that's different, assuming they are in position to know. Did they give a timeline? I guess that'll make EP my go-to oil. Are they phasing anyting else out? Adding anything new?

I've also wondered why they didn't offer "regular" M1 in a 0w20?

When I had asked them about the Noack for AP, they told me they were told it was being discontinued. They got notification that it will no longer exist. They are making EP the 20k mile oil. Should see the new stuff in a few weeks to months.

LOL are they going to try to make EP the next $50 a Jug wonder NOT?

Did they give you an answer on the Noack? I think I read around here somewhere that it was under 8 for 0w20, IIRC. I'd be curious what it is for EP, too, and for the new EP formula.

I'd be shocked if Noack was <8 for M1-AP 0W-20.

Mobil 1 AP 0w20 Noack - 8.9%
Mobil 1 AP 5w20 Noack -8.5%

Mobil 1 0w20/5w20 EP Noack - 10.1%

Whether it changes is unknown.

The LOWEST Noack among any 0w20 is Ravenol DFE and ECS -7.4% and 7.6%.

FWIW, the SpanishYoutube channel that does basic lab testing found Amsoil to be 9.5% for their 0w20 and 9.8% for their 0w30. Which goes to show that Noack is indeed not the most accurate and repeatable all the time. Companies will usually choose to publish the lowest number they can.

PQIA tested it a few years ago and it was 10.8%. Not sure now bc it's changed.

Russian Oil Club showed AFE 0w20 M1 having a Noack of 9.8% and EP 5w30 9%. (all ASTM D5800 method).

One thing I've noticed between the Russian numbers and Spanish YouTube channel is Amsoil's own numbers don't match what the Russian/Spanish have found. Amsoil's numbers run higher. All of the Amsoil grades were 1% higher. So ASM 0w20 showed up as 9.6% as did 0w30/40. For other brands, they are either matching or showing lower.
