HEV, you're the connaiseur I've been looking for! Can you recommend a local (Western US) micro brew that I might like? I prefer dark malty beer, and I'm not fond of hop flavor.

Can't get the Victoria up here, though.

Not anymore.
Tooheys were taken to court and had to drop the Duff label.

To think that the three cases that I consumed would now be worth $15,000......

Moribundman,

I’m not sure what part of Nor Cal you live in, but you might try the following:

Los Gatos Brewing Company (they make very good traditional German lagers)

Magnolia in San Fran. They make very good traditional English ales and are served on a beer engine.

Moylan’s in Novato makes great English/Irish styled beers.

You can PM me if you’d like to tell me where you are located, and I might be able to give you a better list. Finding a malty dark brewpub beer in California without being heavily hopped is quite an undertaking.

FYI, my user name used to be darrenc, but I had to change it for security reasons.

Darren

That's too bad. It's amazing and sad what companies will do to protect their turf.

I can never seem to remem

ber the beers I really liked cause I drink drink drink till I can't drinks no more.....

Mori - indeed, you must love the OK hand pumpers!! I really miss real English ales. CAMRA lives on!!

darrenc - you brew? cool. I used to, but just haven't the time...coaching soccer..work..oil...

Not bragging but I won 2 firsts and a 2nd at the Josephine County fair (Bock, Wheat and Brown ale). I wasn't making the crap up about the Lambics I made. Red currants and wheat malt make an awesome beer. The Framboise was good.....the Kriek (cherry) came out a bit odd though.......Do you know Herb..is he still around (Pizza brewery in Cave Junction and in Brookings)

As for my playboy half....I had no confidence until I hit 40....then I found.......JUST KIDDING......but I have downed many beers during Oktoberfest in Southern Brazil and danced the chicken dance with Brasileras and have consumed much wine with Zhongguo nuhazi.

Tsingtao is OK in China, but just about any beer that makes it to the USA in a green bottle is light spoiled and skunked.

Keith - Green King is GREAT - I gotta be loving Old Peculiar - but heck any ale right now...

Molson Special Dry.
My own homemade Mead.

The worst thing is that alcohol reacts badly to the anti-depressants that I'm taking, and I won't be drinking anytime soon.

Just like you can't be a patriotic American w/o football and apple pie, you can't be a patriotic Canadian without hockey and beer.

Pabs. Sure sounds like you have all the right equipment. Hold on to it. I'm sure you'll use it again. I'm really glad I kept mine after contemplating many times of selling it off. It's funny, I got into lubes as an alternative to brewing since It took less time, was just as neurotically involving, and is still lots of fun.

I miss my glass carboy fermentors. Several years back I replaced them with 10 gal. stainless soda kegs (tube trimmed to let the yeast and trub settle). This setup significantly improved the shelf life and stability of my beer since it never sees air. Transfers from fermentor to 5-gal soda keg are done by pushing the beer out with CO2, and into to a keg purged with gas. It's a great setup, except I can't see the fermentation. What a beautiful sight, and this is what I miss.

I’m convinced we are supposed to drink beer, wine, and other naturally fermented things, so, I don’t worry about those carbs. To **** with them!

I always lagered in my remote controlled fridge in stainless. For a slow secondary, it is indeed the way to go.

The sight a full blown ale ferment is to witness God's work!!!

Hey Pabs. I know what you’re talking about with the kids thing. I’ve got a 2 and 4 year old. I didn’t brew for three and a half years. But, I’m going to try to brew about four times a year now. We’ll see. I mean Jeez, I’ve got something like $3,000 wrapped up in all of my equipment.

I applaud you for attempting those Belgians. About the most esoteric I’ve gotten is when I once made a Wit beer. Turned out great. Having a good yeast selection helps too. With White Labs and Wyeast, you can now make most anything. If you can get a bottle-conditioned Belgian, and know some basic micro, you can make some real authentic stuff.

Were you all-grain brewing? Having taken a 3+ year hiatus, it was real satisfying making beer again. You should give it a go again.

Later,

Darren

Mori,

If you have access to the City, then go to these places:

Magnolia Pub and Brewery
1398 Haight St.
415-864-7468

Speakeasy
1195-A Evans Ave
415-974-0905

Thirsty Bear Brewing
661 Howard
415-974-0905
(Great Tapis)

Toronado
547 Haight (near Fillmore)
Not a brewery, but a tap house. Funky place with 50 beers on tap (and lots of interesting stuff) and a very thorough list of Belgians. Great funky pizza place next door, good Thai across the street, and terrific Indian on the Corner. Mad Dog in the Fog is across the street. They are also a pub with a good selection of interesting beers. A walk from Magnolia to Toronado is about 5-10 min.

If you are curious about other places away from the City, just let me know…

Darren

My most memorable beer drinking excursion was drinking ( tapped 1776 ?) in Djbouti with 2 Russian Spetznaz troops, 2 French Legionares, and our motley group of US reprobates. Long sordid story but that beer sure tasted good in that nasty hot hole of a country. The camaraderie we felt while pounding each other against the walls for cheating at darts was truly a sign of things to come since it was 1979/1980 and pre Soviet demise, pre Iranian Hostage release.

Makes Somalia look like a resort.

Darren - yes all grain. I still have all my hard equipment (15 gallon boil pot with SS spigot), glass fermentors, 5 gallon soda kegs, wort chiller, and such....all my plastics are long gone (2 bucket sparge system, etc). Man - I barely have time to fire the gas BBQ up...let alone cook...so brewing seems so far away now. I applaud you.

Also, as someone stated, I really don't drink much beer anymore for carbo reasons.....5 gallons...would seem like eating an elephant!

I do have the occasional urge to:

A) Drink Oktoberfest beers with thin Brazilian girls in Blumenau......(you would be amazed)...I have the unused Chopp to prove it.

B) Drink odd Belgian beers, fermented in strange ways with strange ingredients, and old unbitter hops....while not thinking about Chinese girls. (you would BE amazed) I have brewed a Framboise and a Kriek, plus a red currant beer.

can i be your friend?

Sprint, sadly no Aussies to down a brew with lately.

Pabs, could you make bio fuels with that old brewing kit ?

I spend way too much time in Brasil, mostly Sao Paulo and I enjoy the Churascarrias and the common Chopp but the "Skol" brewed there is very good. Much cleaner tasting to me than the Brahma.

Do you have any other suggestions while in Brasil and drinking a good Beer ? Obriegato in advance !

I am not as advanced in knowledge of the chemistries as you fellows.

Well you know....some of the stuff I could use...

Anyhow - have you ever made it to Blumenau? Boy that area is really cool. I obviously went for work. I almost stayed! I had ZERO idea they had Oktoberfest there!! Roasted meat....roasted meat...beer....roasted meat....

I never spent any time in Sao Paulo, but I have spent some time in Curitiba. The only beer I had was conglomerate brewed. Not bad, but I don't really know if there are small GOOD breweries.
