Have you clicked on the link? Castrol has eliminated the need to do lab work, keep records or drive cars in real road conditions to test engine oil. The just put a Crown Vic on the dyno and run it really hard in second gear until it blows up. What the heck are we doing with our lab work and record keeping when all along we just had to blow up a few engines and be done with it. I think their way of ultimate testing is a lot more fun. We have been missing all the fun. Leave it to an industry giant to show us the way. They must have a lot of confidence in themselves to give up there secret to oil analysis and testing methods.

I guess I've been at BITOG too long. I saw a commercial on TV with the two crown vics and I started wondering how many used old crown vics it took until they got the result they wanted.

Why worry about science when you have marketing?

Unfortunately, most people are ignorant and aren't aware of real lubrication tests, so marketing like this really catches their eye. We live in an "extreme" environment. People don't want to have to do research and reading...they want something "shocking" to grab their attention.

Don't blame Castrol...blame the people that don't care enough to learn the real truth.

Mobil 1 has indeed released their industry-standard test results (in 2005 from an independent lab) (TEOST test: oil's ability to resist the formation of deposits at high temperatures - part of API, Chrysler, Ford, and ILSAC certification - lower deposit score is better).

Mobil 1: 5.3
Castrol Syntec: 26.4 (~5 times more deposits than M1)
Mobil Clean 7500: 14.6 (yes, almost half vs Syntec)
Syntec Blend: 39.8 (273% more than Clean 7500)

Does Castrol make a 15,000 mile oil? Do they have an oil that meets HTo-06?
dunno.gif

They sure charge a lot for their oils that apparently aren't all that great.

Let's see...your company just spent hundreds of thousands (if not millions) of dollars on an ad campaign. You have thirty seconds to make a point. Do you show something that catches the audience's attention, like the Crown Vic test, or do you have a guy sitting in a chair reading a UOA? Give me a break! Castrol is a great oil, and they are only being smart with their advertising budget. This is just a Castrol-bashing flame post from Mobil 1 kool-aid drinkers.

Sort of funny but did any of you notice in that commercial that they said their Syntec beat out the leading conventional brand? Does that mean it beat out their Castrol GTX? I thought they touted their own conventional as the leading sludge protecting conventional brand. I guess they will now have to pull all of their Castrol GTX sludge commercials, huh? What a bunch of ----.

I would never use anything made by Castrol. They are the devil, and their oils are just awful. Now, may I please have another drink of that fine-tasting XOM Kool-Aid?

I thought that the cars were Chargers?
dunno.gif

Still a D U M B marketing program like Mobil 1 has to help justify people spending double or more for something they don't need.

And Castrol, Mobil and others continue with this marketing since its working.

Shows the average consumer mindset...

I agree, Groucho! I have clicked a few times already after I read this thread.

Honestly, we're being allowed to bite the hand that feeds us here. Think about it. Castrol is helping to pay the bills which make our sniping possible.

Don't care who the company is, marketing rarely has anything to do with reality.

But Wait! There's More! I've gotta go and call right now and get a FREE plastic smoothie cup with air-tight lid if I'm one of the first 50 callers to order the new Turbo Smasher Cooker Juicer thingy! I'll bet that thing will blend my oil and additive concoctions better than an outboard motor mounted in my bathtub.

Thanks to our sponsors for tolerating our insolence. Ditto to the board owners and administrators....

Ha ha... I showed it to my wife and kid and they thought it was pretty cool! Course' they think I'm sort of crazy reading all this technical stuff about oil anyway!

I think any sponsor here knows the deal going into it- a bunch of hyper-critical ninnys with a ton of baggage.

I just saw the GTX HM commercial. It was not technical, but spoke in a usable format and I did not feel talked-down, insulted or embarassed like Mobil Clean's fanciful fireman+hockey player endorsment. Pennzoil's cartoon engine character is pretty poor too. I'm shure there have been even worse. All in all, "Liquid Engineering" is not too bad of a buy-line.

I like the Pennzoil outlaw engine the best, I think the lamest is the Pennzoil Platium ones with the picture of the engine crinkling up. Castrol sludge commercials are as good as any. Iam even surprised to see commercials on oil. Think about it, more people couldnt tell you what brand of oil was even in thier car then could. Out of 10 people you know off hand, how many of them worry about or even know what oil is in thier engine?

I agree that oil ads on TV are geared for the average/below average citizen.
This means that technical oil data isn't going to grab them and appeal to them.
I'd sure appreciate it, though.
