A lot of us on a popular 5th gen 4Runner forum have removed the bypass spring and standpipe from the OEM plastic housing and installed it into a genuine Toyota metal housing PN 15620-31060 to make it the correct height. The standpipe tabs have to be bent to changeover to the metal housing even though the CarCarNut recommends against it at 11:20-12:30
The CarCareNut recommends a 5K mile oil and filter change.
One of the issues I have with his videos - they are looong, often too long for the subj to be covered.
its all MARKETING!!! extra long oil changes + tiny filters are NOT good IMO BUT anything that helps sales regardless of overall long term issues!!! be it big Auto or big oil, food + of course big Pharma our government closes their eyes + ALLOWS almost any claim!!
You ever cut open a used filter from a healthy engine? Did you find anything worth mentioning in the filter? I never did
I like this guy. Until just now I thought Toyotas were well designed cars. This disabused me of that notion. Rube Goldberg must have worked for Toyota engenieering.
This is always struck me as odd. The customer is on the cusp of buying a car that is tens of thousands of dollars, but gee, the oil change interval is 5,000 miles? Nope, no way, do not pass GO, not gonna happen. I can't be bothered to spend an extra $40 a year on an extra oil change. That's my walking around money!
But you know, I'm sure this really happens. These are the kind of idiots with an ARM on their McMansion that contains no furniture and a Tahoe that sits in the garage because they can't afford the gas. Absolutely absurd. Laughable. Has the quality of cars truly reached such parity that ONE EXTRA OIL CHANGE annually is a deal breaker? Because if so, holy smokes, our country is in dire straits.
Ha! When it comes to the Toyota bottom of engine cartridge design, I've invoked the Rube Goldberg comparison here several times. It does seem somewhat fitting, imo. Love the cartoon/illustration.
Says something that Toyota went back spin-on/canister on some engines. However, I would not buy/use a spin on conversion kit, I'd learn to live with the Toyota cartridge design.
Engine top cartridge design seems much better adapted to cartridge changes. That said, I think some vehicle manufacturers have had some issues with start-up rattle with top side cartridge. At least on some models, Hyun/Kia switched to engine bottom from engine top.
