A coworker of mine has possibly the biggest weapon of a vehicle I've ever seen legally on the road.

It's a late 90's Blazer that was, in its prime, a fully-loaded example of GM's compact SUV.

It has however, not aged well. Not that it is the vehicle's fault here

It is forest green with black leather, the 4.3L V6 and 4WD.

She bought the truck 7 years ago. At that time, the only thing that didn't work was the A/C. Since then, it was rolled and had the mirrors super-glued back on. It developed some "electrical gremlins" like the power locks sometimes work, sometimes they don't. It sometimes has turn signals. Magically the rear hatch will power-release by itself while you are travelling at highway speeds.... which is exciting.

Her brother is a mechanic. She took it to him for something (I think a ball-joint) and he flipped out and asked when was the last time it had brakes....... She replied that it stopped fine. He said that this was interesting since it had no pads left on the front and it looked like it had been that way for quite a while. He doesn't see it often (ever).

The front-end is falling out of it now. She doesn't take it out of town because it feels unsafe. It has north of 300,000Km on it, and is rusted out pretty bad. It leaks transmission fluid from a line that has been scabbed together a number of times. It smells like gas because the tank is leaking. The under-hood is extremely oily from when one of the oil lines burst. But it has a new battery!

It wouldn't start (with a new battery... which was heavily discharged) two weeks ago and I discovered a 3+ amp draw from her interior lighting. Pulled the fuse and it has been fine since. However, she's decided that she's going to replace it.
 
Most of those do end up in that condition for some reason. I dont think Ive seen one in a condition I would drive in probably at least a decade.

Scrap it.

The dealer I bought my BMW from has an Explorer that is in good shape (it has been regularly Krown'd or Rust Check'd) that we took a look at Friday after work. She was supposed to take her brother up Saturday to look at it. It would need brakes for a safety.

I'll find out tomorrow how she made out.
 
There's a lady at my kids' school bus stop that has the Trailblazer version of same, the overweight monster new body style. She's too lazy to plow her hilly driveway so she just guns it with the 4WD. New tires were a dramatic expense BUT she idles this car with the window down. For heat? For AC? Just the radio? Heaven knows.

She had money for (then) illegal fireworks but has to go to the gov't for heating oil assistance. She's riding, I'm hatin'.

Nooo, it would pain me to see a good Explorer get treated like that.

Our S10s sure had some problems.

That said, I was a passenger in a 2003 2-door Blazer that was so smooth that it stuck in my mind as one I may like to have.
 
Most of the problems with the Blazer could have been avoided ... Wash it once in a while, replace ALL of the brake lines when they go bad ... simple things like that.

I think, in theory, its still certifiable, but what mechanic would certify a half rolled car, and who would buy it?
 
My best friend had a 1997 Blazer. He bought it with 40k on the clock and did 7-10k dino OCI's at Walmart. Did only necessary maintenance and drove it to 248,000 miles in 5 years when the fuel injection carped out. He got $3k on a trade in which I though was a gift from heaven.
 
Blazers tend to have very weak front suspensions that need more frequent rebuilding when compared to the competition. Wheel bearings are also weak. I frequently deal with electrical gremilins too.

The Toyota 4Runner was a much better vehicle of similar size, and even the Nissan XTerra was better.

I hope it's an '02 or newer so she won't ruin a good one.

Lots of Blazers and Explorers get beaten. My cousin bought a fairly nice '98 2-door when it was only a few years old with about 40K miles on it. Within two or three years it had 125K and was beat to death. I learned to drive on it pretty much and almost rolled it a couple times off road. It had some minor mechanical issues, and quite a few body issues (broken power windows, glove box duct taped closed), but the 4.3 always ran well.
