The big range viscosities... do they lead to sludge?

I was thinking of running Mobil 1 Truck and SUV, or another 5w-40 in my bimmer... the 10w30 feels... kinda thin. I want a thicker oil. But I have heard that when those kinds of oils are used, they are more prone to sludging than a regular 5w30 because of the viscosity.

A good quality synthetic like the Mobil 1 would probably be fine. The old 10w-40s,and strange viscosities like a 10w-50 or 10w-60 may have issues.

You asked for "thoughts".

10W-30 "feels...thin" - what? Your fingers are a calibrated viscometer? What does your BMW call for? Why do you want a thicker oil?

I think you mean viscosity range.

Anyhow - some conventional oils with wide spread viscosity ranges still contain a lot of viscosity index improver's and pour point reducing agents. The new thickeners are better and don't break down as easy and the thinning agents don't boil off quite as easy - but your premise is a bit correct, avoid "those oils", That said M1 is NOT one of those oils. Synthetics don't any or much of those additives. Use it with confidence.
