Come on, guys. Let's throw Deep Purple, Judas Priest, Jethro Tull, and Iron Maiden in the mix. Deep Purple and Tull were still releasing new material until very recently.

In terms of musical ability and versatility, I'd give Ian Anderson of Tull the advantage. Sales and mass popularity aren't everything.

Deep Purple slipped my mind. What an awesome band.

There are very good reasons for that. While Townsend he is a phenomenal player, guitar solos are just not his forte.
