The Animal Shelters Are Full...

Having recently lost one of my bestest buddies, I am patiently waiting for the next one to find ME. Thats how all of my dogs have come to be mine. I think a higher power puts us together, especially when we aren't really trying. Might take a ride to the local shelter soon and see whats in store for me.

I've had several adopted dogs over the years but the last 5 years the applications for adoption are unrealistically invasive privacy wise anymore so I quit. A lot are 10 pages of info they want. Then you don't hear back from them. What do they do with the info? It's almost like a child adoption background check.....
This was us. A vet rerference was required. I hadn't had a pet since I left the farm 20 years ago. How was I going to get a vet reference?

Puppyfinder had no such requirements. Nor did the senior cat that showed up and adopted us.

Best wishes to you 👍

Thanks on that tip. Put in a search and was pleasantly surprised on pug puppies. May have one soon!

Pugs are awesome. We ended up with one and it turned out to be the dog I had been looking for my whole life. Haven’t had a dog since.
I hope he is getting quality filtered water with maximum filtration.

Unfortunately he’s gone, lost him prematurely to a mishap in the driveway. Never cried like that over a dog, took me years to get over it. I know many here understand .

Daughter now has a pug that comes to visit though, I call it the grandpug.

My condolences....
Sounds horrible. 😔

I cried when I lost @AutoMechanic as i realized I should have lost him earlier...

We have 2 dogs and 2 cats, all rescues. One of the cats was found under the hood of my Camry as we drove down the road and he was squalling, hanging on for dear life as he clung to the top of the motor. He couldn't have been 6 weeks old. Obviously, we named him Rider. My wife would like to have a lap dog, but they're really expensive around here and very hard to find. We could go get big dogs all day, but the 2 we have are a Catahoula hound and an Aussiedoodle. We've got all the big dogs we can handle right now. We both think they add much to our lives.

Bob Barker told you what to do......

I don't think any animals should be mistreated but I draw the line at spending more on a pet than what I would on a farm animal. I like my dogs and would be sad when they die but won't lose sleep over it. Being on a farm does that to you.

My wife did buy a Shepadoodle from a friend. I would have preferred a rescue dog but didn't get much choice. We also have a rescue dog that is nice. The only dog I would pay for is a Great Pyrenees but that would be for livestock protection.

Some shelters require way too much for adoption. Some dogs euthanized because of it.
A few years ago a military family was denied adoption by my county shelter. They told the family that they had an unstable situation being military. When the shelter had a public hearing asking for more money, the family showed up and let loose on the facility in front of the county council. I don't think it made any difference. These are some of the obstacles adopters face.
Three military folks returned cats adopted from where daughter volunteers. They were getting deployed abroad . Not optimal families.

Wish I had more space. Good point about the vet bills. They are insane these days. Low cost clinics I bet would help the problem. We had to pay $300 for an ear infection. Medicine probably costs $20. It's getting as bad as human treatments
ANY bills involving pets, (especially dogs) have become insane in regards to cost. When we had our little guy, a grooming was over $50.00 plus a tip. Mobile groomers were $75.00 and up, depending on the size of the dog, and if you let them tap into your water.

2 years ago it cost $425.00 to get his teeth cleaned. He also had a small growth on the roof of his mouth. That was another $400.00+ to remove. And he was already anesthetized from the cleaning when they did it. Otherwise it would have been much higher.

Bill O'Reilly has a Welsh Gorkie that he talks about on his show quite often. The dog developed a brain tumor, and was in fact dying. He finally found a vet that said he could save him with major surgery. He said it ended up costing him over $40K!

The dog is recovering nicely, and would be dead without the surgery. Sure, you can say he's a multi millionaire and he can afford it. But $40K is still $40K, regardless of who writes the check.

And it really points to the problem, that a lot of people who have pets, can no longer afford to give them the care they require. So there are a lot of dogs that suffer as a direct result. So it doesn't surprise me that many of the shelters are full. Many people use them as a dumping site.

We've made the decision not to get another dog. But if we ever did, I would for sure get some type of pet health insurance. Without it you're leaving the door open for some unbelievable vet bills should something happen.

I'm not opposed to going through a shelter but I own a Standard Poodle and I doubt I would ever be able to find one at a shelter next time I am looking for a dog. I'm not open to any breed and have specific desires, even as a family pet (she is not a show dog or anything).
Agree, we needed a dog that didn’t shed. Wife was concerned about allergies.
For that reason we got a Schnauzer/Poodle = Schnoodle
He wasn’t expensive we actually got him as an 8 week puppy from a breeder who bred hunting dogs and didn’t have interest at the time with designer dogs but was given the dogs from a friend who was done with breeding and got out of the business.

14.5 years of ultimate devotion, loyalty and obedience to us and us to him. Love the guy like my own kids. Anyway now completely 100% blind, hearing is so so, nose still works great, joints and bones perfect. Still plays like a puppy until he gets tired and conks out. Still walks on a leash around the community, still “senses” people even on the other side of the street and will “look” and bark at them based on scent if the wind is right. People have zero clue he is completely blind.

Ok so the story is even though he is more work than a dog that can see, he gets around amazingly well. He will follow walls in the house etc. We are there for him as long as he is happy and no pain. Next Dr appointment is about two weeks, we will get an update on how much longer he will live comfortable before we have to make that decision as his heart valves are failing and a FDA approved heart medication is giving him a comfortable life but we are now seeing that medication as we were told is losing effectiveness and he sleeps a lot, I can hear congestion starting to come back to his lungs which stopped last year when he started taking this wonder drug.

I’m guessing he won’t make it to his 15th birthday at the end of July. I DREAD the day we have to make that decision.

That’s his toy box in the background, everyday after breakfast he finds his way from the kitchen to the box and gets his favorite toy, other times during the day sometimes he will go to the box, bark once or twice and see if his favorite toy will appear in the box which he sniffs out once we put it in there. We can’t leave it in all day or we fear he gets so intense barking and kicking it around his heart will give out or he will conk out after 15/20 minutes LOL

For all the wonderful years he has given us it’s now my wife and I time to pay it back and continue to give all we can as long as he still has some quality of life and no pain.
That is the purpose of his doctor visit, to make sure he never suffers and when the time comes for us to make sure he peacefully leaves this world.
