I'm not opposed to going through a shelter but I own a Standard Poodle and I doubt I would ever be able to find one at a shelter next time I am looking for a dog. I'm not open to any breed and have specific desires, even as a family pet (she is not a show dog or anything).
Agree, we needed a dog that didn’t shed. Wife was concerned about allergies.
For that reason we got a Schnauzer/Poodle = Schnoodle
He wasn’t expensive we actually got him as an 8 week puppy from a breeder who bred hunting dogs and didn’t have interest at the time with designer dogs but was given the dogs from a friend who was done with breeding and got out of the business.
14.5 years of ultimate devotion, loyalty and obedience to us and us to him. Love the guy like my own kids. Anyway now completely 100% blind, hearing is so so, nose still works great, joints and bones perfect. Still plays like a puppy until he gets tired and conks out. Still walks on a leash around the community, still “senses” people even on the other side of the street and will “look” and bark at them based on scent if the wind is right. People have zero clue he is completely blind.
Ok so the story is even though he is more work than a dog that can see, he gets around amazingly well. He will follow walls in the house etc. We are there for him as long as he is happy and no pain. Next Dr appointment is about two weeks, we will get an update on how much longer he will live comfortable before we have to make that decision as his heart valves are failing and a FDA approved heart medication is giving him a comfortable life but we are now seeing that medication as we were told is losing effectiveness and he sleeps a lot, I can hear congestion starting to come back to his lungs which stopped last year when he started taking this wonder drug.
I’m guessing he won’t make it to his 15th birthday at the end of July. I DREAD the day we have to make that decision.
That’s his toy box in the background, everyday after breakfast he finds his way from the kitchen to the box and gets his favorite toy, other times during the day sometimes he will go to the box, bark once or twice and see if his favorite toy will appear in the box which he sniffs out once we put it in there. We can’t leave it in all day or we fear he gets so intense barking and kicking it around his heart will give out or he will conk out after 15/20 minutes LOL
For all the wonderful years he has given us it’s now my wife and I time to pay it back and continue to give all we can as long as he still has some quality of life and no pain.
That is the purpose of his doctor visit, to make sure he never suffers and when the time comes for us to make sure he peacefully leaves this world.
