'GC' is ONLY a 0W-30 grade, and the only one you can get readily in NA.

...but, if you want a Castrol Synthetic 0w-40, go to a BMW dealership, and apparently they sell "BMW high-performance 0W-40" synthetic oil, and that will be re-labelled 'Edge 0W-40'. As close as you will get to a 'GC 0W-40'.

Where did you look for M1 0w40? If Autozone doesn't have it, Walmart tends to have it.

Alternative to M1 0w-40 is GC 0w-30. Was there something about GC 0w-30 that you did not like?

No just that tear downs of lighter weight synthetics have still shown bearing wear in rotaries so most guys are running 15W or higher oils. I am from another line of thinking in that the 0W oils are better overall as the heavier weight oils are too thick at start-up which some believe to be the cause of bearing wear.

Of course I religiously warm up my car before going anywhere regardless of the temp. I just don't like the thought of that thick cold oil in my engine at start-up.

15w vs. 0w has no relevance at operating temperature. If the results are valid, something else is at play.

What rotaries? Mazda rotary engines? I thought you were not supposed to run synthetic in those, period...

If you want 0W40 that`s available over the counter vs mail order, grab some Mobil 1 0W40 or Royal Purple 0W40. Both can be bought at O`Reilly.

That's what they always have said but now they have a synthetic specifically for the Renesis engine so we are all confused a bit.

O'reilly's, okay. There is only one formula of 0W-40 Mobile 1 right?

Yep,just one. Walmart Supercenter here used to have it,but they haven`t had it in a while. If you go to O`Reilly and don`t see it on the shelf, just ask for it and they`ll get it from the stockroom.

Mobil-1 0W40 can be found at Walmart,AutoZone,Cheekers,Murries,Advanced Auto Parts and a lot of other places! I find it almost unbelievable that you cannot find M1 0W40 any place that sells M1 has it. I live in the a state that has the pooriest selection of oils Ihave ever seen and even I can find M1 0W40 almost every place that sells oil besides the Hardware Stores like Homdepot or Lowes! So I would recomend you find your nearst Walmart or AUtozone they will have M1 0W40!

That`s a trippy looking jug of oil! Can you get it from the Mazda stealerships here? I have some Nissan fluids here in my stash, some Nissan 75W85 MTF.

You must own an RX-8? The 90`s era RX-7 twin turbos are on my dream car list!!!!!!!!! Are the RX-8`s as much fun? I saw a beautiful all-black one yesterday.

I can't remember where but I do remember reading an official response from Mazda on the subject. Basically, they hadn't tested it, so they didn't want to say you could use it.

As I understand, a rotary engine basically depends on some oil burning off (cleanly of course). I would imagine that the higher flash point of a synthetic oil might mess things up a bit if it is not formulated properly.

Either way, if Mazda is willing to put its name on this oil, run it with confidence IMO. Good on them for making it a 0w-30 too.
