It’s just another line item for annual vehicle registration.Yeah, me neither. What's fair and what works may not be the same.

The average for Texas seems to be $9.5 per months, assuming 21mpg and 12000 annual miles. Given that EVs are a lot heavier, I think it’s pretty fair

IMO with Abbott being Abbott there's a punitive intent to the tax amount.A flat fee of $200 is in no way a "fair" share. ICE drivers pay 20c per gallon. So $200 would equal an ICE driver buying 1000 gallons of fuel and at the national overall average of 25.4 mpg driving 25,400 miles, more than the majority drive per year. So no, $200 isn't a "fair" share it is an inflated share.
The blue state transplant geniuses are also doing away with the annual vehicle inspection. That's how they should be collecting from EV's based on annual odometer reading. I drive 4000 miles annually, 160 gallons, $32 fuel tax. If I had an EV I'd be paying a little over 6 times as much as the ICE. No, we don't need blue state systems and people, this idiotic EV tax being one example.
Likely the initial $7500 was factored into what you paid used, otherwise why buy used?I didn't. I bought mine used.
I'm not so sure. Fire departments might like a piece of that for cleanup efforts.IMO with Abbott being Abbott there's a punitive intent to the tax amount.
That would all be factored into what your choice is for your next vehicle purchase. Aways good to have choices.A flat fee of $200 is in no way a "fair" share. ICE drivers pay 20c per gallon. Are FD's funded from fuel taxes?I'm not so sure. Fire departments might like a piece of that for cleanup efforts.
Registration taxes aren’t fuel taxes and take active legislative efforts to separate from the general fundAre FD's funded from fuel taxes?
And this is why we get rediculous unnecessary fees.Ill gladly pay $200/year to save $400/mo and not have to drive a gasser.
If car fires were a significant public expense that would be an argument for safety inspections.
Lol, they aren't heavier unless we're talking oddities like the new hummer ev.The average for Texas seems to be $9.5 per months, assuming 21mpg and 12000 annual miles. Given that EVs are a lot heavier, I think it’s pretty fair

While I agree, we also do need to consider our nations trash infrastructure and how to fix that. And this is why we get rediculous unnecessary fees.
$200 is only a start, it will keep going up until you aren’t glad to pay it, might take 10 years but .gov wants to get a lot of cars off the road.
We could start by voting out individuals who talk about roads, charge new taxes for roads but then proceed to not use the money to fix roads or insist on wasting it repeatedly repairing new roads in a specific country instead of having a plan to address all areas of the state. While I agree, we also do need to consider our nations trash infrastructure and how to fix that.

35,000 miles, lolYou dont drive much for Texas, 1000 gallons of fuel would be 19.2 gallons per week, I know I use more than that and my car gets 35+mpg
As much as I dislike the government hands in anything that doesnt sound too unfair to me relatively speaking.
And only subsidized for the “right buyers”The loss in resale is pretty close between hybrid vs electric, but only one is heavily subsided by the tax payer.

Texas is a high mileage state, many of my coworkers commute that distance or more, I know one personally who bought an EV and he drives around 40miles one way to work.35,000 miles, lol
in Wisconsin EVs average 5000 miles a year.
Would be interesting to see the spread of driving distances for Texas EV owners by model.
I highly doubt any rural leaf owner drives anywhere near that distance as it would be physically impossible on the small battery.
I have ran up 84,000 miles in mine over 63 months. Which is about 16,000 miles per year but we use it for everything we can since it costs 2cents a mile and goes 30,000+ miles between oil changes.35,000 miles, lol
