I find it interesting that companies can make a single product that can cover multiple OEM requirements. I have a 2008 Honda Civic EX A/T that is due for a flush. I've been going back and forth between the Honda DW1 or Amsoil's multi-vehicle ATF. My questions is this, does a VOA give you enough information between the two ATF products? Are there any other type of tests to give you a better or "full" picture of what exactly differentiates those two ATF products?

I guess I'm confused as to why you'd put a multi-vehicle fluid in something that has a fluid made for it. But, then again, this is BITOG and people play with viscosities like it's fun.

Along those lines, how did well the Amsoil ATF work? And how many miles are on this transmission?

Because sometimes the Honda fluid doesn't do the job. When you get a transmission that is out of warranty (or still under warranty but they won't acknowledge the problem) and the torque converter shutters on lockup, you either have to leave with it, replace the converter, or try a different fluid. In my case, our 08 Accord shuttered terribly with Honda ATF. When the torque converter locked up you wanted to have a good grasp on your coffee cup. The car was under warranty, but the dealer maintained that it was normal operation. I finally got an ATF change out of them, but it didn't help.

On the advice of another BITOG member, I did several drain and refills with Royal Purple Max ATF. It completely eliminated the shutter and the transmission operated perfectly for as long as we owned the car...which was roughly one year and 15,000 miles after the fluid change.

Basically the specs overlap enough that one can make an ATF that covers many transmissions. Amsoil's main ATF covers many but not all. They have a few others that cover most of there rest. While Amsoil may be a bit pricey and not available at Walmart, I would not doubt their high quality nor ability to cover multiple specs.

Now a universal ATF from Big Lots might be a different story.

Just use Honda DW-1...Its whats in my 2006 Accord its pretty smooth. It was designed for it after all.

I have just over 80K on my Taurus with Amsoil ATF. I'm getting at the point of changing it.

It's not cheap to buy, but it's cheap to run and works very very well. I have run it in a Mervon V application, Dex II app. and Chrysler ATF +4. They all ran great.

There are other types of tests but the costs are prohibitive for the general population.

Thanks for actually answering the question.
