Testing an Oil FIlters Effectiveness

I have another question, that I couldn't find the answer to with a quick search. With all the talk of used oil analysis and extended drain intervals, is there a test that can be done to an oil sample to determine how well the filter is working (i.e. how clean the oil is)? It seems like determining the useful life of your oil filter would be an important aspect in deciding on an oil/filter change interval. Maybe i'm just missing something obvious here?

You can pay the extra for a particle count analysis of your used oil, but it is real difficult to get the true filter performance figures as they just quote the maximum efficiency which is when the filter change pressure differential has been reached and is always far better than the new filter figures that is of just as much if not more interest.
The insolubles figure quoted in a normal UOA only gives a rough idea how your oil filter is working and is not much good for a comparison of different filters.
