Test drove a 2011 Mustang V6

I had 2011 V6 convertible auto rental in Hawaii and I was impressed with its performance. My frame of reference is 2010 V6 convertible manual that my colleague has. Difference was like night and day.

My '88 GT had 2.73's from the factory..it was a dog off the line. Sure did haul once it got going though.

Was behind a new GT the other day.. love that sound!!

Doesn't the Mustang still have a live rear axle? I think it's basic rear suspension is like 25 years old now. How do they compete at all with current offerings? Get with it, Ford!

They actually out-handle the competition even with the "antique" live rear axle.

There's nothing wrong with a well-set-up rear solid axle. It's a bit old school, but gets the job done just fine.

I think my dad's 1990 5.0 LX has the 2.73s. It's a light enough car to pull well around town (and it'll light the tires up easily), but on the highway, it's great. If it's got the 2.73s (I'll have to check at some point), that's only 1700 rpm at 70mph. That's TALL gearing, and I'd love to have it in the Jeep (3.73 axles, 2050 rpm at 70mph).

The V6 with 2.73s would be great for someone who wants a decent RWD daily driver than can be a bit of fun. The 3.31s are for those who want it as a performance toy, or who use it as a DD, but don't spend much time on the highway.

Last March, my fiancee bought a 2007 Mustang GT with only 6,900 miles on it. I'm not much of a Ford guy, but when they started that car up, I almost had an accident in my pants. What an exhaust sound for a stock car. For only having 300 horsepower, it sure feels pretty powerful. The car was like new and at a good price. It only has about 9,500 miles on it now and she only drives it on nice days.

I would like to drive one of the new ones with the new 5.0 engine and see what an additional 100 horsepower feels like in these cars. A V8 GT would be the only way to go for me.

My '96 GT was a dog all the time. But it sure played the part well. It looked great, sounded great, and from the driver's seat felt awesomely powerful. Any 99+ GT with an automatic could walk away from me. Cobras and 99+ GT manuals would run away like I was standing still.

I hate to think what a 3.7 V6 would do to it.

I finally found a V6 MT with 3.31 gears at a nearby dealer and took it for a spin today on my lunch break. Still a little disappointing, but I think partly because I was spoiled by my drive of the 5.0 and of the WRX (which is unrelated, of course, but being turbocharged has a better kick feeling than the 3.7 V6 despite its torque deficit). The car is certainly quick and requires revs to get its power (7000 RPM redline). But it lacks the magical combination of grunt and sound that the V8 has.

If I *had* to buy a car, I'd probably consider it because it would be a lot of fun, but compared w/ the GT for more money, or cars like the Mazdaspeed3 and WRX for the same or less money with more utility it'd be a hard pill to swallow in my current situation.
