Not many fires so far. But, as the car ages, the battery packs could start degrading and catching fire. If that happens with any frequency, it will be the end for Tesla. They cannot afford to recall and repair all those battery packs (so they won't) and who wants a car that self immolates?

We've built a car that should NOT catch fire, and when it does, we compare it to regular vehicles that carry around tens of gallons of stuff that MUST be flammable in order to operate.

Our autopilot is safer than the average driver, but we only allow it to be deployed on roads that we choose...the average driver has to drive on all the rest of the roads that we choose not to.

I was just thinking how amazing it is that there aren't more vehicle fires, with tanks full of fuel, lines under pressure, hot exhaust manifolds, wiring, and varied levels of age and maintenance.
