Tesla Model Y LR Electricity Costs vs. Gas

My PG&E off-peak rate is 42 cents per kWh.

Tesla Model Y LR efficiency is 26.2 kWh/100 miles according to this review.

At the time of this post, 87 octane is $5.79/gal at my local Costco.

So, the cost to power a Model Y is about the same as driving a 2023 Prius or Camry Hybrid. Is it inexpensive compared to other things? Sure. But it is definitely not "stupid cheap" like some EV owners would like you to believe.
Is the efficiency the metered amount to charge the car or what the car reports drawn from the battery? If the latter, add ~25% to account for charger and battery charge/discharge efficiency.

To draw from the battery.

21-50% at a 150kW supercharger in NJ:

Got the hang of the charging SW and this was 50-78% same place:

All in all we drove about 145 miles.

That’s $15.6c/mile. If our odyssey returns 20mpg on a bad day, and we are buying gas today at $3.63/gal, that’s 18c/mile. So it’s cheaper to drive a minivan than a supercharged model 3. My Accord Hybrid at 45mpg is 8c/mile. Only the van offers superior utility.

I paid $5.99 for rag at Costco yesterday and $6.39 for wanna be premium today.
My PG&E electric bill was $11.44 last month, which is higher than usual. Of course that included AC, lights, tv, you know, house stuff. And charging the Model 3.
That’s like writing a check to the power company for $10k and saying wow my monthly bill is cheap

Is it stupid cheap compared to an ICE which offers similar performance at the Tesla?

Compared to an Ice in the same performance envelope - yes.

although vette guys will tell you that at 70MPH they'll see 30 MPG - a tiny tap on the fun pedal and that goes out the window.

Well, only if you think short term. But I never think short term. I am a long term investor. My solar project was a no brainer; I am 100% satisfied with it. My recurring monthly costs are next to nothing. What about your's?
The solar project net gain over time will be huge. That's reality, not "that's like".

The $12 I paid last month is what, 2 gallons of cheap gas?

I agree with you Jefe...

Long term its a no brainer if you have the real estate to take advantage of it.

until NEM 3 that is then the party is over.

I produced 129KWh in excess last month.
So, I think wife’s Tiguan will be deported soon. Here comes X5 45e.

Congrats on the export.

Im seeing larger output that I anticipated because of multiple changes at the time the array went live. Basically I dont need to run the AC anymore.

Im also looking for a home for the juice and a PHEV is looking like a great compromise for me as well.

Im going to look at the bimmers and the rav4prime.

Yeah, it is more than I anticipated, although AC was running as wife works from home and her aquarium needs tempered temperature.
Therefore, I think once gas oven and stow breaks, electric are in. Maybe even electric water heater. I can still save some on different light bulbs.

Yes it does.

If your goal is the very cheapest transportation you can get, then starting with a much cheaper car always a good idea.

Lets not pretend the driving experience is remotely the same.

Ones a dog slow penalty box, the other a super quick machine capable of slaying a very high % of all gasoline vehicles 0-60 and quarter mile.
Okay, slaying a very high % of ICE vehicles up here isn't working. You do not need a high performance vehicle to drive around the holes like a drunken sailor, 55 and 65 mph speed limit, 75 you are probably okay but 80 will cost and the cops are on a money making mission. Then there is the winter, snow, ice, salt and even more holes.

The MB W123 was one of the best cars ever made despite some only had 59HP diesel engines and definitely not a penalty box. You want to blow Tesla away, a litre bike will smoke it at the drop of hat and equal a plaid at 2.3 sec 0-60 for a GSX-R R1000 for under 25K and the battery isn't going out running it and it is a lot more fun.

I grew up on litrebikes then added aftermarket turbos. I could talk about them all day. I miss them, and nothing will fill the gap.

I have zero investment. Just pay monthly. It’s great. I plan on moving in a couple years and don’t need to sell my power generation business.

Zero investment? IMO the biggest risk is taking no risk.
Well, I live in a beautiful place; perhaps you know what property costs in Los Gatos? My cost of housing is really low. No mortgage, super low energy costs. I got this way by planning and investing for the long term. I ain't going nowhere. You don't get to this position overnight.
By the way, solar adds to the value of your home, even though people who buy here are buying the zip code more than the property. It really is a no brainer.

Good luck to you with your move.

Yeah but, the EPA rating for 2022 Model 3 is 26 kWh/100 miles from the wall including all charging losses. Pretty similar to the number quoted. And believe it or not, the EPA EV numbers are very good, even beatable. My Model S is 38 kWh EPA, 34 kWh measured with the utility meter that I purchased from eBay and installed on the circuit.
