Tesla enables driver camera monitor - about time!

Doesn't Subaru (and a few other makers have some kind of driver inattentive monitoring system? Suppise to detect if the driver is falling asleep, etc?

If hands free auto pilot driving cars become the norm someday, I can see the Fed's mandating that a system like this needs to be in all self driving cars for safety purposes.

You know, most folks don’t know this but self-driving cars are actually nothing new. The first one ever made rolled off of the assembly line in 1957 and was literally life altering. It could anticipate any move you might make and `correct’ any errant behavior on the part of the driver. But sadly, just as with today’s most advanced versions, some people were injured and quite a few killed due to bad driving behavior. And yes, a number of drivers back then were hacked as well though not digitally.

Reminds me of the stern warnings Elon has given us all about the future of AI. No thank you, Sir, there are enough cameras on me already. I'm not interested in paying for another to "keep an eye" on me. I'm a big boy and made it nearly 50 years without my car watching me too make sure I'm a good boy.

I'm sure we could agree on many behaviors that should be labeled "dangerous." But what about the behaviors that are not universally considered dangerous? Who is the arbiter of what is dangerous and what is not? It's called a slippery slope for a reason. Lawsuits over XXX when the camera didn't do it's job result in the nanny state choosing ultimate risk aversion over common sense.

Can I ask your age? Asking simple because I see so many 30 and under who are willing to give up immense freedoms and from my viewpoint, do not see the perils of control that tech like this brings. I'm not labeling you with that but curious.
Totally agree as things are getting to be a bit much and ridiculous these days. The constant talk of AI this/that is a joke to me as the human brain will simply never be outdone regardless of AI applications. IMBHO the tech savvy just want to be less involved (typically lazy) and want systems in place to live life for them as some can't figure things out on their own. Case in point is the Buick commercial in which the car parallel parks for the driver. In my state parallel parking is/was a must to be issued a license to begin with. Another case in point is the insane dependency on cellphone use. Most people can't live 5 mins without a screen in their face and are totally oblivious to their surroundings in the process... *** is this country/world coming to? Driving safely is a responsible privilege, not a simple luxury.

That is not in my 17 Outback limited. The eyesight system on the OB does work and work well.

They aren't waiting for auto pilot to become mainstream; the infrastructure bill has big brother tech farming data from your personal vehicle to the fed.

The latest OTA update uses the cabin camera to keep an eye on the driver. It's about time.
Drivers going to great lengths to trick the car into thinking they are using AP correctly are idiots and should be treated as criminals.
I cannot understand their dangerous behavior. Who do they think they are?

Maybe I will test it... Perhaps look down at my cell phone and see what it does.
Probably alert the Ploice and drive itself straight to the pokey...

Camera based driver monitor
Of course it has only taken a few years worth of wrecks and the now real threat of the NHTSA pulling the plug on AP entirely.

All kinds of info on GM, and they had super cruise in 2017 for 2018 my. Which sort of deflates “but when will they come out with it”
None of it is for me, and as far as I‘m concerned there ought to be a law against all auto or whatever pilot.

Sorry, I was completely unaware that GM had an operational auto pilot or self driving system already available. I guess it hasn't got much publicity, probably because they aren't the darlings of the auto industry when it comes to tech like Tesla is.

That being said, I'm still skeptical of how well it works and how successful it will be. I can't think of much in the way of "innovations" that GM has come up with in the last 60 years that actually worked out well.

Does this mean that FSD will not require hands on the wheel?

I’ve had a chance to try out Tesla’s system and Super Cruise and vastly prefer super cruise for that reason. Felt like hands on the wheel defeats the purpose of the feature and is tedious to use. Never got why hands on the wheel was so important (wait before your wisecracks) In the grand scheme of things you’re seated in front of the wheel, it takes a 1/4 of a second to grab the wheel. Most important thing is actually seeing the thing outside you need to take action on, not the minute fraction of time it takes to physically get your hands on the wheel.
I don’t buy into full autonomy being reasonably feasible in the next few years but like the idea of resting my arms or eating a bagel on long boring ass drives down I-10.

Self driving will eventually arrive, not the half butt stuff we have today though. While self driving evolves over the decades our road and the laws will evolve with it as well.

This is like how automobile changes the road and the laws at the same time.

If the horse knows the way It is the best self driving yet done. You CAN go to sleep at the reins. Probably not get in the back of the wagon, the horse requires the little pressure to know you are there. All in all superior to what we have now.
