If GM produces more cars with doors like Teslas, please let me know the models because I guess they’re all out of my price class?
I’ve never seen one nor have I’ve read about anybody being incinerated because of it

It's not in the base Chevrolets, but GM is the first brand I ever saw this release design from and they're emergency releases are in worse spots than most Teslas. I used to be in the rental car world 10 years ago and spent 11 years there. GM was the only company I regularly came across these in. Tesla wasn't even using them yet.

I keep window smashers in our EVs in case the doors can't be opened for some reason. If I had a Cybertruck I would drill into my family where the emergency releases were, and still carry these things.

Speaking of trucks catching fire.

Our dispatch got a call about a Silvarado EV on fire from OnStar. When the officers got there, apparently the main screen was displaying a message advising everyone to exit the vehicle, battery fault, SOS.

OnStar was apparently also on the phone with our dispatchers advising everyone to stay 100 feet away and to not tow the vehicle for an hour.

Truck was just smoking and didn't actually burn last I heard.

Can't count how many times I've been to junk yards and found even slightly damaged vehicles with doors that would not open. it doesn't take much on any vehicle to jam the doors shut. 1/8 inch? 1/16th?

ANY time someone innocent dies in a car accident it's tragic. That said, this Guardian piece, as I read it, came across (at least to me) as a bit anti Elon Musk. When I Googled The Guardian, and found what I expected. 2+2 usually equals 4.

I think ALL EV's have the built in possibility of burning at very high temperatures. If Teslas are especially hard to exit in emergencies then Tesla needs to address that.

I would believe that if the Guardian wanted to be neutral, they could find similar stories on EV's by other manufacturers.
I wouldn't mind having a Tesla. What I don't like is having to pay a subscription to keep features working.

China has banned electric door releases for 2027 from what I've read. Not sure what Tesla is planning on.

Just a bit of advice based upon experience:

The best "window smasher" is a spring loaded center punch, guaranteed to shatter tempered glass, which can then be easily and safely (almost no sharp edges) pushed out of the way.

I understand that there is a move toward more manufacturers using laminated glass in side windows. This is information that owners are going to need to know if they intend to purchase and rely on devices to break out the windows. Devices that work well for tempered glass will not be effective on laminated glass.

Well according to the four kids that died in a Cybertruck crash last year their friend couldn't get the door open or break the window.

You can't break any window with bare hands, possibly injured and stressed. I once had to borrow a hammer to smash the small triangular rear window on my 1996 4Runner and it took me something like six or seven blows. The first two or three were indeed testing the waters, but after that it was full swing (limited by a car parked next to it, but still plenty full swing).

The second to last hit bounced the hammer back in a way where I almost hit the car parked next. So - it bounced it almost the full length of the swing.

I only managed to smash it at the hit after that one.

Any movie where some tough guy smashes a car window with a bare fist makes me giggle hysterically. Spiked gloves and sparkplug ceramics are another story. Pinching the edge of the glass with pliers is also another story. It will desintegrate with a smile. But hitting it will have it laugh at you.

Not saying that a Cybertruck's window will be smashable by a regular car window smasher - it probably won't. Just saying that the kid not being able to smash the window is no criteria whatsoever. With bare hands he wouldn't have been able to smash the window on a Mitsubishi Mirage.
