Terrifying BMW lane assist problem

I took a 2020 ,330I for a test drive. Going about 40 mph I saw a Red Tesla stopped with its left side about 2 ft into my lane. So I steered to my left to pass the stopped Tesla.

Steering to my left made the car I was driving cross over a double yellow line. When that happened the lane assist tried to correct me and put me back into my lane!

It litterly tried to rip the steering wheel out of my hands! It took all I had to pull the wheel to the left to avoid hitting the stopped Tesla.

I also slammed on the brakes as I was sure I was going to get into an accident. I was able to get the BMW back under my controll and missed the parked car by millimeters. .

I assume the system in the BMW must have a bad sensor or whatever and it did not "see" the stoppd Tesla .

Whatever the reason made me dislike that system.

Imagine trying to explain to my boss why I ran into a red stopped car.

I'd contact BMW NA and tell them. We've turned off all that stuff in our 230i. Perhaps you overcorrected?

Our RAV4 has lane assist which works quite well in conjunction with cruise control to keep you chugging along in your lane. It will subtly nudge you back if you drift over the lines but it's not anything that can't be overcome easily by the driver.

Reason why I turn off all that junk. Only thing that is on is BSM and parking sensors.

It should drop out if you activate the turn signal or the brakes. The OP doesn't say they did either of those.
Yes he did he slammed on the brakes. The steering correct should drop off as soon as the driver applies force against what the car is trying to do. Your Granny should be able to over power it. It should not take “everything he had” to do it.

I stomped on the brakes. Was just a 2 lane rd. My best impression of the area. me being the red arrow and the stopped car the green square.

with the blinker on the lane keeping assistant wouldn't engage. like you supoosed to do when changing lanes

My wife's 2020 X3 will cry fowl if you try to cross a double yellow. You have to be forceful with the wheel. If using the turn signal, there is no issue, but what's the fun in that?

Good thing it was a test drive. Now you know that you don't want a car with a computer controlled and motorized steering wheel. Or more generally, a car that can forcefully and suddenly take over from you as the driver. I resemble that. I have a car that I drive, not a car that drives me. That said, there are so many terrible drivers out there, perhaps we should be glad that these automatic driving features are so popular.

Our newest car is a 2007. No keep in your lane stuff and no tpms. My jeep I daily does not have antilock
