Just stay well west of Memphis Tennessee. Memphis is the "Chocolate City" your current mayor has a wet dream fantasy of creating. Example: 66 public officials in the slammer or awaiting trial.

Every single one of them is innocent. Every single indictment is racially motivated. Their defense?? The FBI is a racist organization. Our newly elected congressman Steve Cohen's first act in Washington was to call on congress to formally pass a resolution apologizing for slavery. I could go on for several more hours, but you get the point.

I'm actually headed to Memphis today to see some accounts. That has to be the most corrupt city that I've ever been in. You literally couldn't pay me enough to put up with the things that goes on in Memphis.

I'm a moderator on an Arkansas Razorbacks message board and one of our members is a neurosurgeon. Here is his story of Memphis:

"I lived in Memphis for 6 years, worked as a doctor at the trauma center (The Med). You haven't seen the half of it. On a hot August night, we'd get at least 10 gunshot victims a night. At least. Most would get patched up and released within a few hours. One night got a tourist who had been chopped up with a hatchet. Had to clean out his brain where the hatched had lodged dirt and debris. This happened two blocks south of Beale street. The city is an absolute corrupt, lawless entity. I forsee no improvement any time soon. We left for a nicer life in Chattanooga. But all in all, you just can't beat NWA."

The shootings make Memphis sound like Richmond, VA. At one time we had the highest per capita murder rate. Something to be proud of. But here is where the jobs are, and like everywhere else, if you live away from the city those type of problems are left behind.

CousinCletus's comments about West Virginia are spot on. Along Interstate 81 a new high-tech corridor has appeared and seems to be thriving. That area of WV is a bedroom community for Washington, DC, so housing prices are probably rather higher than in other parts of the state, but everything he has said about the people and crime is true.

The only question I have about West Virginians is, if one divorces his wife, are they still brother and sister?

The comments on North Carolina are totally wrong. NC sucks please tell all your friends. Unless you are just coming for a visit.Remember NC sucks tell everyone.

Well now, it all depends on where your at. It's true that NC politics are controlled by one party, and the corruption is about equal to NJ. But the justice dept. has finally taken notice and there is some serious house cleaning going on. Finally. It's also true that left coasters and northeasteners have migrated in and are in the process of taking over, at least here in Clt. Money talks... But there are some really nice places in NC. Mountains, Oceans, rivers, forests, Lots of Collages & Universities, Charlotte is the banking center of the South East. Job market is good. Housing is mostly affordable, although it's getting kind of expensive here in Clt. A lot of people retired here in the 80's & 90's. Some of the more well-to-do still are. I think it's worth taking a look at. (And several Mercedes dealers).

Shhhh! He's trying to make it sound unattractive, so people will stay out.
BTW it sucks here too. Don't bother coming to see...

Little Rock isn't bad at all IMO. I live in Arkadelphia, and I try to go up there as much as possible. I would love to live in the Heights!! What a great old neighborhood. Of course, the Rock has it's bad points too!!

A shift of power to Northwest Arkansas seems to be taking place IMO. That part of the state is really growing. The rest of the state not so much or so it seems to me.

As for the weather, it gets hot but I like it that way. I hate winter.

Arkapigdiesel, I maintain an automobile collection for a urologist. Your neurosurgeon poster is spot on.

Half the "democrats" in Memphis have one kidney from gunshot wounds. The comedians in Branson refer to Memphis as "The Garden City."

You know the punchline... everyone is garden their home, garden their, car, garden their children ect.

Coot been lookin'.

Over yonder... away from the maddening crowds.

Small hamlet. Rural. Cheap housing.

Little old sod shanty on the plain fine... as long as there's running water and electricity and an indoor outhouse.

Coot spoiled by modern amenities.

Lack of jobs, though, in those far-flung few humans hamlets.

Need to win lottery.

Coot out.

Reviving this thread . . .

The trip is planned for Nov. 3 - 7, and I'm checking out hotels/motels. So far the Best Western in Sherwood looks good. Anybody know if there are good breakfast or lunch diners (I-Hop is fine, but are there any local places?) around Sherwood or North Little Rock?

Also, I'm planning to take my local informant -- my colleague Jan's sister -- and her husband to dinner; any recommendations there?

I went to college in Russellville, Arkansas. I spent a lot of time around that area and the Conway / Little Rock area. It's all very nice there. If you can find a job and your wife or whatever isn't obsessed with needing to be in a large urban area (my situation), more power to you. I grew up in Southeast Arkansas and it's not much different from Northern Lousianna.

I live in Memphis now, and I have to say that's it's NOT THAT BAD. Don't get me wrong, don't go out late at night without packing heat, but the people getting shot and killed are overwhelmingly gang members and friends having disputes.

My job is located in the downtown area and I'm out and about quite a lot and I've never been the victim of any kind of violent crime. I'm white, short, weak-voiced, and average built - and I've never once felt threatened. The only problem I ever have are panhandlers / beggars, which are common but are dealt with easily. I live in an incorporated suburb in a very nice area with great restuarants close by and my apartment is awesome. My commute to work is only about 30 minutes. My point is that the Memphis Metro is not some lawless Mad Max-type place like so many people make it out to be.

However, I would have to say that Memphis drivers suck and the roads CAN be like Mad Max.

Live `125 miles N. of Little Rock. Wife is R.N.,currently working as contract nurse in LR. Nursing agency furnishes an apartment. She works and stays in western side of town(area at end of 630 bypass). Went down a couple weekends ago for a bit of "town life" and was really impressed with that area of Little Rock. Clean, neat, modern, very upscale. Back in the spring she was working San Francisco when I flew out for a weekend. Amazing similarities! For the most part, I'd stay with well known chain resturants. VERY notable exceptions are "Corky's BBQ" a very limited chain originating in Memphis. EXCELLENT RIBS! For untimate dining experience with PILES of fantastic entrees, go to the "Cajun's Wharf" This place looks like ramshackle river front warehouse (which is what it used to be, before turned into resturant), but it's been THE culinary experience in Little Rock for over 30years!

Bob

Update: Well, I've been to LR, and have to agree with everyone that it is indeed a clean and nice place. I'm not dead sure that's where I'll move, though.

I loved the properly paved streets and highways, the ability to make a left turn at almost all intersections, the beautiful hills and homes up in the Hillcrest and Heights areas. There were local places to eat, coffee shops, even 24-hour IHOPs. Not too big, not too crowded. Pinnacle Mountain State Park is only 20 minutes away for hiking.

That said, I'm annoyed that there are no newsstands, that the only places to buy certain magazines (say, Playboy . . .) are Barnes & Noble and Books-a-Million, and B-a-M actually tucks Playboy and Penthouse away behind the customer service counter so you have to ask for them. Maybe that's standard procedure for Bible-Belt states?

Nearly everyone there told me that their summers are as long as those in NO. It was 80 degrees on Monday, for example. Part of what I want is a shorter summer . . . and the locals warned me I wouldn't get it there. Maybe I should be looking farther north, or north and west.

Ah, well, it was a fun trip.
