I'm not considering Techron to solve a problem, I just hear that it's a good idea once in a while to add a bottle. I'm a firm believer that if it ain't broke, don't fix it.. but Techron intrigues me.

There's zero risk in using Techron, is that correct?

Techron cleans fuel injectors and helps remove carbon deposits. All gas has some detergent cleaner in it. This is just more and better.

You don't keep wearing clothes until they are completely dirty from head to toe and can stand on their own in the corner? You wash them on a regular basis.

I have used Techron for years in my cars, trucks and even occassionally in my lawn equipment. I read an article a couple of years ago in one of my favorite car magazines, Hemmings Muscle Machines, by one of my favorite car tech writers, Ray Bohacz, about fuel systems and Ray endorsed the Techron by name, saying it was a good product and is well worth using to keep fuel systems clean. His endorsement convinced me I had been doing the right thing for my vehicles. I had used it for years at that point and haven't heard any negatives on it's use. When you try it be sure to get the bottle that's marked 'concentrate'...it's BOGO at O'Reillys I think through March.

The corollary to "if it ain't broke..." is,
"If it works, maintain it so it keeps working."

You change the oil in a perfectly fine engine, right?

Techron is generally safe when used as directed.

Generally safe yes. They recommend a limit on how many times during an oci, I think it is 5 times.

Cases where vehicles went kaput are in the original study. A few vehicles in the field test of Chevron employee vehicles broke down due to excessive dislodging of gunk. This was back in the 70s and happened on older neglected vehicles.

To clarify, 2 cases of spark plug fouling and 1 case of fuel filter plugging.

The spark plug fouling was from vehicles that has been operated in stop and go driving for thousands of kms. Deposits jammed between electrodes causing misfire.

Fuel filter plugging was put down to removal of existing rust from fuel tank.

They didn't see these problems in other field tests.

These finding were published in 1983.

Bought 2 bottles at O'reillys today, each bottle treats 20 gallons, BOGO. I only treat mine about twice a year.

That was well before Techron (PEA) - 1995. Might have even been before Techroline.

Using a high detergent fuel is supposed to eliminate the need for additive in a bottle.

Chevron claims that their aftermarket additives typically aren't needed if their fuel is used regularly.

Q. Do I need to add a bottle of deposit control additive such as Techron® Concentrate Plus to the gasoline in my fuel tank?
A. If you regularly use a high-quality gasoline such as Chevron, you probably don't need Techron Concentrate Plus. However, if you have an engine that is sensitive to deposit formation, or if your vehicle is regularly used under severe conditions, you may also benefit from using Techron Concentrate Plus.

Techron seems to be one of the better ones.
There is just to many snake oil others.

One of my vehicles have had nothing but Chevron. Almost 60k on the clock and I've only used a bottle of Techron twice and didn't notice anything. Maybe that's a good thing?

Use it in a tank of fuel a few hundred miles before you change your oil... I usually use a bottle of Redline or Techron once every 5K miles or before an OCI...

Yeah. Just like changing oil regularly, you will never notice anything and the engine keeps running for 300-500k miles.

I use Techron in my cars every other year just before smog check, all cars passed with good margin. If I don't use Techron my cars may pass smog check, but 1 bottle every 2 years is a good insurance.
