Does anyone have any experience with Taurus handguns? I'm thinking of getting my wife a 22 magnum revolver DA for self pretection. Or should I go with another gun maker?

Thanks very much.

Captain Howdy,

I have 3 of these fine revolvers/pistold in my battery and love all of them!!! I don't know what they offer now a days but if the 22 magnum has a 2" barrel just like the Smith & Wesson version then go for it. They're well made and are protected by a life time warranty. None of mine has ever fail me yet.

I own a taurus tracker 44 mag,a 24/7 semi auto in .45 cal.and have owned several taurus revolvers and pistols.Highly recomend them!

I've got a 6 inch 38sp and its a good shooter, its very loose on lockup and its finish (blued) is very poor. The thing will rust if you look at it.

We have 3 of them in the family and all are the same. Again performs well and is great to shoot, but its no Ruger or S&W.

Also, I have seen how their customer service works with my dads semi auto. NOT GOOD.

Make sure you get a good one, if there are any issues and you think a quick trip will take care of the problem, stay away.

Take care, bill

Oh, also rethink the 22 mag for self defense. I have a few and while anything is better than nothing, a 22 mag is one of the last cartridges I'd grab for SD...

Unless it was a squirrel...

While I personally am not interested in any caliber that does not begin with a "4", without knowing this family's particular situation I would not presume to condemn their choice of cartridge...too many variables. Like the old saying, I would rather be missed by a .45 than hit with a .22

The fit and finish of Taurus is nothing near Smith and Wesson. Add to that the heavy trigger pull of a taurus revolver compared to a Smith and Wesson. I've seen plenty of busted firing pins on Taurus revolvers.

I don't think Taurus revolvers are junk, just a poor attempt at trying to clone a top notch revolver like Smith and Wesson's.

Bill, thanks for the comment. I've heard that before. That a .22 tends to just make the assailant more angry. Although I wouldn't want to take one in the chest.

I have a friend who owns a .357 revolver. Think I'll have her shoot that loaded with 38s to see how she handles it.

She thought someone had gotten into the basement a few months back. Ended up calling the police to check it out since she jammed my 9mm pistol trying to cock it. We've also had someone knock at the door at 2am wanting to borrow some gas. Funny, they didn't have a gas can.

Thanks everyone for your comments!

I've got more than a few firearms

and when my wife was deciding on what to have with her when she is alone at home with the kids for SD, she picked a S&W model 686 (4 inch) with slimmer grips and loaded with 38+p ammo.

She shoots quite a bit and its the one she likes the most.

When out and about, Glock 26 for its size.

I have seen folks shot with a 22lr and its more of a joke as every one of them is still awake and moving around.

The 22lr is better than a 25 or 32 auto though. We have had folks hit with those and WE noticed the wound before they did!

Sadly, *if* I had to shoot someone, I want them done. Or atleast not moving any more. So 38sp, 9mm, .357, .40 or up for me..

I'll have to say that my Taurus trigger is excellent out of the box as are the others. In fact, better than a few of my smiths!

I agree that the fit and finsh could be better.

Like I said, *if* I was buying a Taurus, it better be perfect out of the box, cause I don't want to go through their customer "service" dept..

Ive had quiet a few Taurus's and always felt they were excellent guns for the price and on par with much more expensive guns. I think one would serve you well. Alot of you may be getting the 22 LR mixed up with the .22 magnum. The .22 mag is a mean little cartridge. I carried one with me always when I drove truck and never felt it wouldnt do, Id prefer it over a .38, extemily accurate and wicked. It is the fastest cartidge with over 2000 fps. I used it to dispatch pheasants and coyote sized wild dogs, ussually with one shot. It will do quiet some damage to thin skinned mammals and believe me they will notice if they are shot with a .22 magnum.

For a simple answer - YES a Taurus will do you fine. I own 7 Tauri - all top quality and fine shooters. I have a very large gun collection and it's hard to beat Taurus's quality/features to price ratio anywhere. While S&W revolvers may have a little more finesse and a Springfield XD pistol may have a better trigger than a PT-140 - there's quite a price difference. Just my opinion, for what it's worth. But I have to add (as others already have) that you should reconsider the .22LR choice.

Correction - I missed the point that Panzerman made - you said 22 mag. Well, that is much better than 22LR. I have a little Charter Arms mini revolver in 22mag. While a real cute gun, that 22mag packs a sting. But - still I'd rethink any 22 for defense unless it works best for your wife.

They are not exact copies but are very simular. They're produced from the same tooling through a contract agreement long ago. Believe me Taurus know what they're doing as they were taught by S & W personel. Taurus now makes their own Berettas for their own Army through teachings of Beretta personel also.

I'll take a Taurus anytime anywhere!!! Again lifetime guarantee. How can anyone beat that! :-)

I agree, Durango. My guns that I use for concealed carry are a Taurus PT-140 Millenim .40cal, a S&W 360PD Scandium .357 revolver - weighs only 12oz!, a Colt Defender in .45 and a Springfield XD-9. Guess what 2 I carry the most? The Taurus and the S&W. The Taurus is light and carrys 10rds and has never failed me at the range. My second fav is the superlight .357 SMith that I carry in summer clothes. The taurus was under $400 and the Smith cost me almost $800. So to me, the Taurus provides value and I won't cry if I have to give it up after defending myself! I've never had to use the Taurus lifetime warranty on any of mine (I have 7) and the oldest one I bought in 1989.

I do have to add that whatever gun a person does decide on it must be what's good for them. I can't off my head think of a bad gun with today's many quality manufacturers.

I had a Taurus model 945. Loved it. I recently had the opportunity to get a Sig for a great deal and I sold my Taurus to a friend. He loves it. No problems. Someday I would like to get a Taurus 911 stainless.

Panzerman,

If you want a little mean cartridge as a subsitute for the 22 mag? I wish they made one using the 17.cal!!! That little bugger with that balistic tip on the end will do some pretty good damage. The velocity is much faster than the mag.

You need enough penetration to reach vital organs for a round to be effective for self defense. The really fast, light, expanding rounds don't penetrate well.
