Hi All,

Just picked up a new Taurus G3C. Been looking for a 9MM carry pistol for a while (mostly just for having at the house.)

Where would be a good place online to buy 9MM ammo? What are your favorites? Also, looking for a small, secure storage "box" of some sort. Recommendations?

Appreciate it.

PSA has good prices on ammo.
they run some shipping deals often.
https://palmettostatearmory.com

about 23-25cents a round for fmj

they also have some slightly Spicer 85grain norma MHP
for .26/round (sold in 50 round boxes) 500 rounds for aprox 130+13.49 shipping.

regular 115g JHP rounds start around 42-45cents.

PSA is good.

I buy a lot of ammo from SGAmmo. www.sgammo.com

I would have recommended Target Sports USA, but they sold me several cases of really lousy Winchester .300 BLK ammo.

Ammo that had gotten wet, and jams in the rifle.

They suggested I contact Winchester. I will, but in the meantime, will not recommend them nor will I send them my money.

What would you recommend for just range ammo?

Either of you guys reload? We will have 4 in the house and considering getting a family membership at a local gun club. So wondering if reloading would be worth it?

Reloading is an interesting hobby and you will save money. Collecting spent brass and reusing for reloading will be a little time consuming but still worthwhile. You need to have components on hand, primers, powders, brass and bullets so you will have a little money tied up but worth it in the long run. You can reload for about 9 cents a round and sometimes less depending on caliber. You have to be precise in your sequence and your skills when reloading. Otherwise you might get a BOOM instead of a Bang.

Make sure you test and evaluate prior to using the G3C. First off, I like Taurus and I have a few of their guns. The used G3C I picked up is going to need some fine tuning to be 100% reliable. First range trip was not very encouraging but I only had one brand and type of ammo. The next range session I will run a bunch of different ammo through it. I like the G3C so for me its worth making it work. Key word was used. I saved some money but would have been better off buying new.

I like to use ammo I have on hand. Try 115 grain for range and see what the gun will tolerate. Bullet weight, overall length of cartridge, type of powder all play a part. Fiocchi or S&B always seem to run fine for me.

you wont save any money reloading 9mm at 23cents a round imo.
now if you are reloading HP well those cost abit more.

I would use standard 115g fmj for range.. and breakin.
and a couple boxes of defense ammo to make sure it runs good ..whatever you pick.

my ruger security 9 fires it all.. so not an issue for me.
1300fps 85gr
147gr
124gr
115gr
They all go bang reliably.

Thanks for the replies everyone. I bought the gun brand new. Haven't fired it yet. I got 30 days of free range time where I picked up the gun. Won't be able to go until next weekend though.

I picked up some Range ammo: MaxxTech Brass 9mm - 500 rounds of 115 grain FMJ. On sale for $109 free shipping (decent price?)

Also picked up (defense ammo) 9mm - Federal Law Enforcement HST 9mm +P Ammo - 50 rounds of 124 grain JHP. - $34.99

The defense ammo was recommended by ammo.com and tested for the Taurus G3C for defense ammo as a best buy. Taurus manual says only use +P ammo for self defense, not for range use. Pressures I guess?

With the whole family interested in joining a club, I think I'll definitely be interested in reloading. Is there a "kit" available? Defintely budget friendly, but one that works and is safe.

Those are fine choices.. after a couple hundred rounds of regular ammo
I'd probably run a box of the defense ammo to make sure your gun cycles reliably with it.
assuming it has no issues with a couple hundred rounds of range ammo.

I have had a couple of guns that took 100 rounds or so to run reliably - a Beretta 92, for example.

So, my recommendation is clean it, lube it, take it to the range. Run 100 rounds of ball ammo. See how it does.

Then run a full magazine of the defensive ammo. Make certain the ammo and the gun “like” each other.

Clean it even though brand new?

I’ll do that next weekend. Run the Maxxtech then a clip of the defense ammo at end.

Great advice guys! Appreciate it.

I picked up a cleaning kit and some gun cleaner and oil on Amazon. Plus a range bag.

3D printed a speed loader. Works great.

Thanks!

Yes. Even though brand new. Dirt, dust, lint, whatever might have settled on it. Might be some debris from manufacturing or test firing.

So, I like to clean them.

Then proper lube. Many guns ship with preservative, but not lube.

One exception - Glock. They ship with copper grease in the slide rails and specifically say to shoot it. Looks like copper antiseize to me.

I will still run a patch down the bore, but I’m known to be overly meticulous…

Makes sense. Watching gun cleaning videos this morning. Seems pretty easy to clean / lube this gun.

Appreciate it!

I personally think that cleaning and lubing your gun should be something every gun owner knows how to do. By taking the pistol apart, you understand it’s components, you’re familiar with how they normally look, you’re better able to understand the function, as well as troubleshoot malfunctions.

So, when a component begins to wear out, you’ll see the difference in operation and be able to correct it with a new spring, or whatever.

I tend to keep every gun in what I call “fully operational“ condition. That means I would have no problems loading up a full magazine, and a spare, putting that thing on my hip, and trusting my life to it.

That means that about every 5,000 rounds or so, the gun gets taken completely apart, the components, particularly the extractor, checked closely, and the recoil spring or assembly replaced.

Outstanding advice. Waiting on some cleaning components and then will take apart and clean and lubricate. Looking forward to it. Tons of YouTube videos that go into a lot of detail on cleaning the G3C. Can’t wait to get to range this weekend coming.

Shot the MaxxTech ammo today. Had 5 light primer strikes in 100 rounds. Another guy was at range and he had same ammo and same issues. The monarch ammo from academy shot fine.

Target Sports USA has good prices and reasonable or free shipping.
Have had good experience with all of their 9mm. Not so much with some .38 I bought recently.
Life's too short to reload 9mm.
