Tapping into a remote filter set-up to add bypass

All,

I want to run T adapters between the hoses and where they go into the 90 degree fittings in the picture below. The idea would be to run a small feed to the Motorguard (or other) bypass filter off of the input hose to the remote filter, and then dump the return line (from the bypass) into the return line from the remote filter.

I kknow this would work if I dumped the bypass return line into the valve cover or some other return, however, it would be cleaner to do it as described above.

I'm wondering if there is enough pressure delta (caused by the FF filter) between the input and output line of the remote FF filter set-up so this could be accomplished.

There will be little to no flow to the bypass until the ff gets some age on it. If you don't do extended drains of higher mileage (around 10k) it won't be worth it. For $15.99 ..get a Permacool sandwich and use that for your tap/return. It will assure a 2psi differential for the bypass filter.

So...same amount of hose ...hose barbs ..no t-fittings ..One permacool sandwich on the + cost side.

So I would simply spin the permacool adapter between the remote filter mount and the 1515 filter?

I'm assuming this adapter wouldn't restrict flow through the remote set up? I'm a little concerned that the existing set up might already be reducing flow to the oiling system due to the 4' (x2) of 1/2" id lines to the remote set up.
 
Yes the Permacool will spin on between the mount and your current filter.

I share your concern of the flow restriction but it's very, very surprising how much oil can flow through a small hose or opening. I chose to use a Frantz single port adapter since it had no restriction though in doing it again, I'd consider a Permacool I think.

Yes, just put the Permacool sandwich between your 51515 and your remote mount and then plumb your bypass filter of choice to it.

It would be extremely rare that the relief valve in the Permacool wouldn't do the job. It should give you a constant 2 psid across both filters.

Do you have a true pressure gauge? If so, you should see the same psi before and after the installation. Unless it drops a noteworthy % (I doubt any) ..then you drill an EXTREMELY SMALL HOLE in the permacool to supplement the sprung poppet.

I'd call wefilterit.com and see what they say first ..and also see if that fitting is less expensive then a sandwich adapter. I don't see the fitting offered outside the autotrans kit ...but I imagine it's available

It doesn't appear to be available in 1/2", though ..at least from wefilterit. They offer it in 1/8, 1/4, ahd 3/8

With the wefilterit adapter, I think I would still have the problem of not enough difference in pressure between the inlet and the outlet in the bypass filter.

Wouldn't I gary?
 
At low volume levels/lower visc you would see no flow through your MG. The oil would have no problem just going through a 3/8" opening. That is, unless there's a regulating component to that fitting that isn't apparent from looking at it

Let me explain further what I'm saying. I have a remote filter setup that uses a Permacool sandwich. I soldered/welded the poppet shut to assure 100% flow to the filters. I developed a fissure in the weld that allowed flow to bypass the filters (a non-engineered version of that fitting). Now I get good enough flow to the filters when going down the road ..but at idle ...zip. The stuff would rather pass through a pinhole then pump all the way up to my remote filters (about 18-22" of vertical pump head). Now if I just removed the poppet (which appears smaller then a 1/4" opening) then I would almost never see any flow to the filter ....maybe some during warm up.
 
Ralph also sells this type of adapter for transmission use if you don't have a MotorGuard with the bypass "built in". It was around $10.

Someone in this forum had run some before and after flow testing on one of the largest Frantz transmission adapters. This device put a very large restriction into the overall flow to get enough differential to run the Frantz or MotorGuard he was using. He was going to remove it, install a filter base and put a Permacool onto it. Splitting the flow into 2 streams in this device and then rejoining did not result in the output being the same. Maybe do some searches.

This would concern me in this setup with 8 feet of hose already sending the oil on a long journey.

Space permitting, I believe the Permacool adapter could also be used between the block and the adapter for the remote that is there now.

If a Permacool and a Motorguard ATF(with built in Bypass) was used at the engine mount, then the current remote filter would see less flow than it does so would reduce the effect of any inefficiencies of the long lines...

Alternatively there is always the "traditional" install method of stealing from the sender port (or one of your lines like you'd mentioned) and returning to a low pressure area like the oil cap or drain plug.

This part, if everything is working properly, would not be true. The remote filter should see 100% of the oil pump's output. It should see the combined flow of the bypass filter and the flow that is going through the permacool pressure relief. The only difference, again if all things are operating properly and in typical manner, is that pressure changes will be realized upstream of the Permacool. No changes in gpm/flow should occur. The only time flow can be reduced, in any engine, is when the oil pump's internal relief setting is reached. That is a result of pressure elevations from the engine "back" to the pump of all things in between.

Oil lines would have to be very long to restrict flow. The pressure drop over several feet on even 3/8" line would probably only be measurable in inches of water column.
 
Your're right, sorry I gapped. The bypass filter is just replacing the oil cooler that would normally be connected to the Permacool...so the bypass is just in series with the FF so the bypassed oil joins the rest of the flow and heads off to the FF...the long lines had me preoccupied.
 
I'm still trying to bridge my gaps. I still keep looking for some documentary on some drug that they handed out to school kids in the 60's that resulted in altered synaptic firing.
