Talk to me about spray on bedliners

I've had a drop-in in my F250SD since I got it in 1999. I love it!

This drop-in is not as slidy as the others I've had. It's one that is specially made to be that way. I've put everything imaginable in it and had no troubles at all. Looks great still.

I've used just a mat. They scrunch up when sliding things in and out. I don't like that.

Never had a spray in, but I don't imagine it would stop a dent from a dropped rock or steel. Drop-ins would.

I know of some guys that use their trucks without any bed treatment the minute it leaves the showroom. Imagine that! I cringe watching a cement block scrape across the perfect, new paint.

Each method has its pros and cons.
- Mats don't protect the sides and wells.
- I have seen dented and chipped spray on.
- I use the under rail drop ins. Yes, they will rust underneath after the paint is rubbed off, but the truck beds have always out lasted the rest of the truck (12 years +, Michigan salt) in my case.

Then there's the slide vs. no slide decision. Yikes.

Regarding DIY, the only ones I've seen were very thin and chipped up. Hey, there's the answer: $100 DIY paint on, with a drop in installed over it. No rust, no dents.

Spray in liners look very nice, and function well. Downside? Well, if you plan on using a shovel to remove material from the bed (dirt, sand, bark, etc.) be VERY careful not to dig into the bed. My liner (Line x) allowed an occasional shovel slice to dig out a chunk or two of the liner or leave a flap like a roofing shingle. Not as tough as they say it is. Plastic liners can be ugly and cause moisture and grit (sanding action underneath) issues.
Both have pluses and minuses.

I think if I were dropping heavy objects or shoveling something, I'd add a rubber mat. I purchased a rather heavy, thick custom fit one for under $80 years ago and it doesn't move.

Just a thought.

All of the mats I've had in the last few trucks have stayed put no matter what I've had/used the truck for.

I bought my last one off Amazon for $59 and since it was over $25 I got free shipping... (The shipping was $47!)

Nice thick one at that!

I don't know how they do it?? Its a name brand one, has the "dots" on the bottom to prevent rust and custom cut to the bed (even down to the little bump for the fuel filler).

The last one I bought for my 2000 Silverado local was close to $100.. And I thought I got a "deal".

Take care, Bill
