Talk me into buying this Tacoma

Not sure I would agree that the Tacoma would be more than your 02 Wrangler.

Useful? Maybe, but for what?

I did a similar thread in which I asked folks to talk me OUT of a purchase, from which they failed. But in my case, I had been wanting one for many years.

In your case, what can the Tacoma do that the Jeep can't.

Not sure if you have a small utility trailer, but if you dont have one, it would be much cheaper than the Tacoma, and could haul more stuff.

Of course, if your Jeep is having issues then there is a different dynamic to the question.

All in all, if your Jeep is solid,, I would vote for keeping the Jeep, and getting a trailer, for use as a truck bed.

Sorry.
Jeep has a couple minor issues. Most annoying is a broken mode door for the HVAC. Can't get a new one. Paint is peeling....Stuff like that Engine and transmision, driveline seems ok. Does not use a noticible amount of oil. Often she will call me and ask me to pick up a 2x4 or a few bags of chicken feed. Getting 50 lb bags out of the rear seat is a terrible job. No way to transport a board with it.

Not too excited about pulling a trailer around with me because the wife might call and need something picked up on my way home.

Power is down a little. Its still usable around town but definatly lost some power in the last 22 years. Normal wear? worn cam? Loose timing chain? prolly a combination of all?

I would not think twice about taking a long trip in it.

It has never been on a tow truck.

Well, it was just my perspective. Good luck on the decision.

If you are looking at Tacoma, why not look all around the country?
I am shopping Sequoia 2018-2022 and looking all around country. I just missed on in Houston. While I was sending copies of DL and insurance, someone walked into the dealership and bought the car.
If you want something specific, you need to look all lower 48.

You already have a truck. Have the wife plan ahead and lump together any runs needed, drive the truck on that day to work.

I would generally say not to buy a 2012 of this gen Tacoma. First year of the injection pump and they're known to fail.

That said, the Toyota tax is real. Quick search around here is placing '12's around $22,000 for ones around 100K miles, and being in the rust belt you know they ain't as clean as a Cali truck.

Sounds like the Jeep needs some sort of rear or roof cargo carrier/ rack that will be out of the way when unused.

This thread reads like "I want a $600/mo car payment so I can grab a free broken lawnmower on the side of the road I can fix up and sell for $50."

I've hauled a 10 foot exhaust pipe in my Prius with the front seat reclined and the hatch closed. Wouldn't want the passenger airbag to go off though. 😁 I've brought boxes and boxes of floor tile home in a Saturn SL. And I own a truck-- it sees 1000 miles a year.

600 dollars per month would be great for retirement investing or a cushion for emergency repairs as needed, Yeah I sound like my dad.

Are you going to ship it or go get it? I am having to expand my own search, so I am wondering how I might get mine home?

Its nice to dream big. Slept on it and ya I think its best to not go into dept for a car I don't absolutly need at the moment when my well is on its last legs . I know that as soon as I got a truck my well will go kaput completly with no way to afford to fix it.

Guess I should clean up the jeep today as Its pretty dirty and I hate dirty cars.

Get it. I cannot contemplate not trying a vehicle before purchase.
No I agree, but isn't it difficult to drive home without plates, etc? I am likely buying within driving distance. So I would need to go look, buy, then come home and register, then find a buddy and drive back.

Or do you just get the dealer to slap a temporary tag on. South Carolina makes that really difficult to do anymore. The temp tags come from the DMV. If I buy in South Carolina then its a non issue since I can just go to the local DMV, but not sure about going to GA or NC or FL? I should page @macarose - I bet he knows?

I could rent a tow dolly or trailer, but I think it might be over weight for my fronty. Max tow I think is 6200lbs.

I'm not sure how SC does it, but except for two vehicles, I bought all my cars out of state. While I lived in AL, I would get my car in the ATL area. They would slap temporary tags, but you have your insurance anyway. I think you have three days to put that particular vehicle on insurance.
When I lived in San DIego, I got Tiguan (one I own now) in Charlotsville, VA, they slapped temporary.
X5 in Minneapolis, this BMW in DC area. All of them slapped their state temporary tags and I drove. I got a BMW in December 2019; by the time they expired, COVID already hit, and there were delays, and CO just kept issuing temporary tags until, I think, April-May 2020, when I finally got permanent tags. I think the dealership where you buy the vehicle will send all the paperwork to your DMV. In CO, once they got papers, they send you letter to come to DMV and register vehicle.
