I've had two knee replacements and a hip replacement in the past 18 months, and the bruising can be alarming, but is quite common.
They use a tourniquet (usually a blood pressure cuff inflated to 300 mgHg) to stop the flow of blood to the knee during surgery. The blood can interfere with the bone cement interdigitating with the bone surface, so they like to keep the bone clean. That causes a lot of the bruising.
It usually clears up in a couple of weeks. Your mileage may vary. Good luck!

My mom asked me "How many backs do you have?" I said "One." She said "Take care it." Did I listen? No, I was too busy being a hoss. Since then I've had a rotator cuff repair, acl replacement, knee replacement, laminectomy, and multi-level fusion. Now I'm enjoying my new Stihl BR800 blower and FS131R string trimmer. Gotta go down swingin'! Take care of those knees, you've only got 1 1/2!

+1
I've invested in a set of rubber/padded knee pads for when I'm doing auto maintenance.
Total game changer!
I found that the best knee pads were the Husky brand from Home Depot.. Wow, talk about cushioning! Drop to my knees when working on the car, can't feel anything! I had relatives who had knee surgery in the 80s (dark days compared to now) where they stressed to take care of my knees. I'm lucky I listened.

but to @mjk1967 I hope your recovery is quick, I've heard total knee replacement is much better than half.

A retired guy has been consulting for us - in between projects - he wanted to do both knees at the same time (afraid he’d be replaced) … Told him that’s crazy and we will hold a place for him. He’s healing from the first now - and knows that was not grounded in reality …

I think a lot of guys beat up knees and body playing football in highschool and college.

I just played with neighborhood kids two hand touch. (Mainly because I was not good enough to be on a real team).

And when some men grow up they beat up their body doing construction.

Of course I beat up my back sitting in at my desk in office chair.

No one gets to old age in 100% good shape.

Wife has a total knee replacement in March 2025 and it was HORRIBLE from a post-op pain point-of-view. None of the pain meds seemed to touch it for the first 3 weeks. 8 months later she is hiking 5 miles every other day with no pain, although she still consistently has mild pain throughout the night sleeping. It's getting better slowly but still affects her sleep.

She has had her fair share of surgeries - C-section x3, carpal tunnel, gastric sleeve, two prior knee surgeries, and she had zero pain tolerance issues with any of them, but the knee replacement was next level to the point where she doesn't think she'd ever do it again.

Luckily, this was the result of osteoarthritis which was due to a knee injury she sustained running in her early 20s that required surgery and the doc warned her then that a knee replacement was likely in her far future (31 years later) and the other knee looks perfect.

Playing ice hockey when younger is a common cause of knee injuries up here.
I always chuckle when I hear someone say "ice hockey", granted it's usually someone here in the USA and not a Canadian.

I had a relative who says: ice hockey, no it's just hockey, what other kind of hockey is there?

Ouch. My dad needs a knee replacement for his left knee too but he’s scared of surgery. I don’t blame him I am too. My knees kill me after working all day but I make sure when I need to kneel down that I have my knee pads or kneeling pad. I’ve been doing automotive work as a career for almost 7 years and been working in shops for almost 10 if you include school so lots of time spent on concrete already despite only being 23.

Elderly friends from New Zealand visited us back in the late '80s.

My hockey bag was open and my equipment was spread around drying out.

Gus saw my skates and asked "Isn't it hard to run in those?"

A picture and a thousand words, so I put on a VHS tape of a game I'd recorded. Gus watched for a few minutes and said "Oh, I see, it's a bit like hockey!". 😄

To the Kiwis, field hockey is just hockey.

*******

Regarding other types, there's floor hockey, ball/street hockey, table hockey, sponge hockey ... and probably some I'm forgetting.
