Hi

Talking about the Ford 6F50 in my '10 Taurus.

Anytime I am coming to stop I can physically feel the transmission downshifting and also the tach jumps about 4-500 each time it drops a gear. Anyone else have this happen? I tell ya, the 4 speed GM transmission I had in my Grand Am was 10X smoother and less funky than this slushbox.

Throt

That's normal for most automatic transmissions I have drove. Only a few products (GM) seem to have torque converters that seem to hide all of that.

Your Taurus 6f50 is less slushy than most slushboxes.

Try driving a Jeep Cherokee with an AW-4!

I haven't driven a '10 Ford Taurus, but my old Acura does something similar. You can really feel it downshift and feel the engine braking, even with it being an automatic.

UNLESS you have that wonderful throttle by wire that Ford makes, then seamless is an accident.

YMMV

My '99 Taurus jumped the tach about 800 RPM on each UPSHIFT. The car would practically drive itself and required new front brakes every 18-24 months (about 10K-15K miles).

While coasting down a steep hill, you could put it in Neutral, the tach would jump up about 1,500 RPM, and then would track up and down depending on whether you picked up or lost speed.

I took it to the dealer and they said it was normal, they all do that. Neither my Honda nor my Toyota do that. I will make it a point that any vehicle I purchase will not do that.

Agreed. I will be doing a much more extensive test drive next time. I don't care for it at all.

The revving in neutral under motion thing was to save the trans for when people would accidentally pump it into neutral while driving.

When cold, mine would idle at 2500 RPM ... same as my '11 focus and my father's F350. It would take off and get up to about 30MPH on its own ... with the engine cold and in gear.

I don't know why Ford has to idle at crazy speeds to light the cat off. No one else seems to do it.

I suspect it is because Ford knows less about emissions and transmissions than their competition, and is not interested in spending real R&D dollars to learn.
