T-Mobile - The force to be reckoned with

The first time was in 2010, the second time was in 2019 (figuring that they must have improved by then).
2014 and 11/2020 for me.. although I know for sure they dont get service in half my building from coworker feedback.. a bunch switched tmob to cricket.. for that reason.

They couldn't have done it without sprint's backbone

In what respect?

T-Mo US has always been a GSM carrier. DT got into the U.S. market by buying a smaller PCS carrier, and also buying capacity from AT&T, and started with coverage limited to a few states.

Along the way, it picked up some more smaller carriers, but was hamstrung by its reliance on high-band spectrum that doesn't penetrate buildings well, which is a big part of its legacy and still puts it at some disadvantage today.

After spinning its wheels for a decade or so, mired in last place, DT got tired of the U.S. market and saw AT&T's buyout offer as a convenient exit, but that would not be received well by anyone, including the Feds, who put the kibosh on the deal.

But that turned out to be fortuitous for T-Mo, because it now had a $3B breakup fee to play with, and rights to $1B worth of the Death Star's spectrum.

Not long after, it hired some dude named John Legere, who used that kitty to buy more spectrum, invest in the network, and became famous for his "Un-carrier" marketing initiatives during his tenure, which also help goad Big Red and Big Blue to put some effort into competing.

Meanwhile, the heady days when Sprint did well enough to buy Nextel, and shovel money into sponsoring the France family's little racing series were declining, and drawing to a close, as was its reputation in the network standings, and it snatched last place as T-Mo ascended. Two ships passing in the marketplace.

As far as Charlie Ergen's dreams of being the fourth carrier, there is plenty of work to do. Accumulating some spectrum, and customers from a low-end MVNO is a start, but either he, or his lawyers badly dropped the ball when they didn't work to include some assurances that they had longer to move those customers off the old CDMA network before T-Mo planned shut it down. A legal dispute is not an auspicious way to start.

I was very fortunate to have jumped ship to T-Mobile pre-merger when they were doing the unlimited two lines all inclusive for $100 deal. I could not be any happier with the service and customer service.

If they ran fiber in my area for a price comparable to Google, I would switch that over as well.
+1 on customer service

I have the T-Mobile Home internet here in Grand Rivers, Kentucky. Works great! Had AT&T U-verse here and it was the only game in town. AT&T had 12mb down and streaming was iffy. You had to have a land line with 200min/mo and it was $106/mo. I am getting about 50mb down on the T-Mobile and no buffering for the $50/mo that is all charges. Had T mobile phones before and had to switch to Consumer Cellular to get service where we camp.

I fill out the form online almost every week, waiting for it to come to our area. We tried it back in Jan of 2021 but had to return the equipment and cancel, the towers need to be upgraded here.
Verizon home internet, same deal here, even though we just got a post card that 5g home internet is available in our area from Verizon, when going online to order it says not available yet. I even called Verizon, person suggested maybe they are expecting it soon to be available.

*LOL* Frustrating because we have one tower literally less than a mile away (straight line not road miles) and another about 3 miles.

I dont like Verizon nor their pricing but I will try whatever company offers it first to my area. Verizon normally charges WAY more than TMobile home internet but (I guess because Tmobile competition) they are offering the same deal and price as TMobile here right now and guaranteed price for 2 or 3 years. I much rather have TMobile though, because they normally grandfather prices in.

I tried T-mobile home internet at my house. Couldn't get upload over 1mbps. Too bad. Was hoping for decent cheap internet. Stuck with crappy slow expensive internet until Starlink is available in my location.
Verizon works so-so here. At&t is awesome here, but their home internet plan sucks.

It will only be a matter of time before all the towers are upgraded.

I just hate waiting. I guess you must be really stuck where you live because Star Link is retarded expensive but if you have no choice …

Wait, you do have a choice according to your post. AT&T Hass to be much cheaper than Starlink ever will be.
Starlink is $100 a month plus $400 for the equipment plus you have to install it yourself.
It’s going to be available in my area soon but I’ll never go for that price. I’m waiting for Verizon or AT&T which shouldn’t be long as we already have a number of cell towers here.

Starlink is really only for people who have no other choices other than Satellite Internet. As expensive as it is, it is still a cheaper and a much better option than the other two Satellite Internet providers (assuming that it works as advertised). In addition to the higher speed and no data cap, my guess is that it has a much lower latency than the other two.

I recently got the T-Mobile internet service also, in Louisville. On my tablet I got 290mb download speed and 44.8 on upload. I also have the phone service and combining the 2 and being over 55 the internet is $40 a month. I pay $90 for both and very happy with the services.

But SRT20 said ATT is awesome where he is but the Home Internet plan sucks, well if so, I was making him aware of the cost for Starlink, It might make the ATT service look good to him after seeing the price of the Starlink

Thank you and darn it!!
It’s driving me crazy waiting … For it to be available and I’m reminded of it every time I drive by the local cell towers around here!!!!!

FWIW we signed up two weeks ago and it’s working fine so far. About 675-700 download and 40-80 upload. I was going to keep our cable Internet for an extra month but it was working so well that I cancelled it early. No dropouts yet that I’ve noticed and no perceived slowdowns. $50/month with a $50 gift card.

Darn it!! Again!!
I check once a week both T-Mobile and Verizon. I’m not sure if everybody knows it in here, we did try it in January 2021 but had to return it, speeds were unreliable and for the most part slow.
T-Mobile to their credit really worked on it drove by my house in relation to the cell tower. The equipment on the tower isn’t up to the task yet and I’m waiting for them to upgrade it.
Actually I think it was because of our house they made it unavailable to the entire area for now.
I can tell you one thing for a corporation it was a pleasure dealing with T-Mobile and their tech support team. As soon as it’s available again I’ll be back.
I can’t wait to tell Spectrum to stick it!

All depends on where you are. T-Mobile service is poor in many places where ATT and Verizon have coverage where I often use my phone. My workplace also stopped using Tmobile for data as it didn't work in many rural locations where our jobs are. Switched to Verizon with no issues in that case.

Are they a force to be reckoned with? Depends on your location and needs... Same as its always been.

My new Toyota came with a trial wifi provided by at&t still haven't tried it.. anyone know if its 5g or standard LTE? Wouldn't matter as far as I know att doesn't have 5g my way yet.

Like any provider, location, location, location. I assume you know we are talking about Home Internet Service and not cell phone service.
Verizon, ATT and T-Mobile not available at my location yet.

I assume you know that neither the topic you posted nor the article you referenced are about home internet service only. You started talking about home internet service in Post #20.

Historically in my area, T-mobil has worked well when you are nearer populated areas. Currently, they still seem to have more holes in their network and have not expanded into areas I either work or play in. ATT is the king in those places, thus has my business.

That's why I take any article touting how great some service is with a grain of salt... They can cherry pick the metrics they want and they all look great...

Yes it's clear they are only going to sell Home Internet to homes which are close to a tower with plenty of capacity. So it's pie in the sky for rural areas.

Here is what the companies offer to anyone in their coverage area as data only 4G / 5G:
Verizon: 100 GB $80 ($50 bundled with additional smartphone or second data line), slows down.
AT&T : 100 GB $55, no bundle requirement, hard cap.
T-Mobile: 50 GB $50, no bundle, slows down.
