Synthetic in a high mileage transfer case?

I know it isn't the best idea to put synthetic oil in a 200,000 mile engine or transmission if that isn't what it's had it's whole life, but what about the transfer case? Will there be any problems with leakage or anything if I switch to synthetic after 200k?

Hi,
Eaton-Fuller ( now Meritor ) the maker of heavy truck axles carried out a lot of research on the changeover issue over a decade ago
They stated afterwards that you can do it but there is a risk of weepage/leakage as the synthetic tends to remove deposits left on seals by mineral oils of a GL5 rating
I have changed vehicles over and not experienced any "seeps" or "weeps"!

Regards

I should mention, this transfer case calls for ATF, not gear oil.

Hi,
sorry I thought it was a GL5 gear oil application

If ATF has been in there a good branded synthetic ATF will be fine and the chance of seeps or leaks is about zero

Amongst the Porsche fraternity here we use Castrol's synthetic Transmax Z but I do not think it is sold under that name in NA. It is great stuff

Regards

your transfer case should have the same fluid as your transmission. the transfer case itself doesn't care what you put in it. for instance in a toyota pickup if you have a manual transmission the transfer case calls for the same gear oil, if you have a auto the same transfer case gets filled with atf.
sometimes the transmission and t/c share oil but still have to be filled seperatly.

Why is that? I know they definately don't share fluid...

I donno what yours calls for but my manual says two different fluids... although the better fluid works backward with the other... Anyway, just look at the numbers from the manual.
if it says 75-90 find that, if you cant then 80-90 but don't go overboard like 80-140????
If it calls for GL-5 then use that gear oil class.
Usually the two I believe are the same, but not always, but almost always from what I've found!
Me, I'd be thinking the best protection for the transmission. Just me~!!!

I would use a 10 cSt ATF such as Redlines High Temperature fluid. As far as leaks go, any new clean fluid might cause a leak if the seals are worn. Usually by 200,000 miles, you will need a chain replacement anyway if the TC has that type of design.

i know from your other post that you have an auto transmission. you stated that you transfer case calls for atf. why use two differnt atfs? if you run redline atf in the transmission you might as well put it in the t/c too.
