I better not give you my home address, you'll be breaking into my house to steal the german 0w30 from my oil shrine!

Now I just need to find the specs on this oil somehow.

Guys, get your new diapers ready :0 (kidding). After emailing Castrol to get info. on this stuff I got this reply: “We don’t have information on oils sold outside of N.A.”. After writing a nasty reply back saying I found this at a local blah, blah, blah, I got the following reply today:

Well, I was certainly out of the loop on this one! I apologize for the
misinformation, and here are the facts.

Yes, the Syntec 0W-30 does come from Germany. As it already existed there,
we decided to take advantage of that production source. Color differences are common and are usually due to different additive sources, but this should not be a cause for concern. The base stock of the 0W-30 oil is PAO. In this unique low temperature application, it was found that PAO was the best
way to go.

As to the Typical Inspection Data, that appears below. If you do not
receive it in a legible chart format, please advise and I will either mail or fax it if you will give us that number.

Once again, thank you for writing and for allowing me to clarify the issue,
for both of us. Your interest in Castrol products is greatly appreciated.

I'd be willing to be these are the specs for the "made in the USA" 0w30. The HTHS is the giveaway. If this oil is rated A3, it has to have an HTHS >3.5.

Those specs are for the USA stuff for sure, I've had those specs for months now.

The German stuff has to be way better in many areas, such as the forementioned HTHS for sure.

Yeah, and the pour point is another giveaway. -42 is a pretty good Group III pour point, but it sucks for PAO. I'd expect this oil to have a pour point somewhere around -54 at least.

I agree. I thought about that last night after studying the specs...ACEA A1...that's the real giveaway...the specs are from 6/02.

OK, who speaks German here?

Could you visit the German Castrol site:

http://www.castrol.de/

..and see if there are any technical specs on the 0w30 there. The SLX 0w30 is probably it. Perhaps you could email the guys there if there is no technical data sheet on that page?

I think you can just send them email in whatever language. The last few responses I've received from them sounded like I was talking to C3PO.

Thanks Greg! I sent them an email now, so hopefully whoever reads it can speak English, or at least forward it on to someone that does. And I hope their tech reps are better than the North American ones, who know very little about oil (I found this out on Friday when I phoned Castrol to get more info on this oil and the person on the other end of the phone didn't sound like she knew the difference between motor oil and vegetable oil)

Problem is I can't even read the website enough to know where to find out how to contact them!

Just called a local VW dealer. They want $12/L for the Syntec 5-40...parts guy said it was from "the states" but couldn't elaborate any further.

Anyone know where else you could get this stuff other than the ridiculous stealer price?
